28 Truth Bombs Dropped That Made People Realize They Were Dating Monsters

Reddit user Select_Example_794 asked, "What’s THE secret you discovered that made you leave your ex?" People quickly began spilling shocking secrets in the replies. Here's what they revealed:

1."He was married with a son. I found a box of his wedding photos, and he tried to tell me he, the groom, holding the bride, was just the best man! I took the train home immediately. He was also not 21, he was 30. Guy was a bellend."

2."He had a kid he never told me about from a one-night stand before meeting me. Color me surprised when he was out of town, and I found child support payment forms. I confronted him, and he said, 'I was going to tell you this week!' The kid was 3!!! And his whole family lied to me, too. No one said a word the four years we were together. He missed the start of his child's life so I wouldn't be mad. Unreal."

3."I found out that my ex had killed another person (father of four) in a DUI, and his best buddy (cop) helped to destroy the dockets, so the case was thrown out of court. My ex is still partying, drinking, and driving and enjoys his life while a mother is raising her kids without a husband. All the while, his buddy made sure his record stayed clean. By the way, that buddy passed away due to a DUI a few years ago."

4."The friend 'who was like a sister to him' was actually his long-distance girlfriend, who was expecting him to propose. I got suspicious and messaged her. She confirmed it. I took a screenshot and sent it to him, along with a message reading, 'I am done with you,' then blocked him and cried my heart out."

5."My ex-husband was having his fourth affair (that I know of) and told my then-13-year-old-daughter. He told her he'd never speak to her again if she told me or anyone else. After suffering in silence for two weeks, she finally told me after a trip to the ER to cure her migraine that was brought on by stress."

6."He charged over $150k on credit cards behind my back."

7."I bragged to a friend (in front of my girlfriend) that my girlfriend and I had only fought once in our two years of dating. My girlfriend said we never fought because she didn't care enough about me to fight about anything. She also was cheating on me, but I didn't learn that one until after the relationship ended."

8."My boyfriend of three and a half years told me he wasn't graduating from college because his counselor messed up one of his credits. The real reason was that he failed a class by not going to it for three months. So, for three months, he pretended to be going to the class, doing homework for the class, etc. He was telling me lies the whole time. He told me and his parents the truth the day before graduation. To top it off, he was in his fifth year of college and had already failed multiple classes. All he had to do was get a C-!"

9."I found a book of poetry he had written hidden on his (28-year-old) side of the bed about his 19-year-old female coworker he had become friends with. He wrote about 'her beautiful grey eyes.' My eyes are green. I had been paying for all our living expenses for over a year, and we had just returned from a Valentine's Day trip, which I, again, paid for myself. I gathered all his stuff together while he was at work and kicked him out the same day. I also highlighted the particularly damning parts of the journal in case he was confused about why I was mad. He said because he hadn't done anything physical, he thought it 'didn't count' as cheating. But he wasn't in a relationship with me realistically. He was in a fantasy relationship with her. I was just his meal ticket."

10."When I was 21, my parents bought me a custom-designed diamond ring for my birthday, which was so gorgeous. It was the first piece of 'real' jewelry I had, and I cherished it. I wore it daily, except when showering or doing dishes. I would put it safely in my ring box. One day, I couldn't find it and absolutely panicked. I looked everywhere. My ex pretended he was also panicked (he deserved an Oscar for that performance) and 'looked' everywhere, too. A week later, his sister's wedding ring went missing. She and her husband made a police report and also told them about my ring (we all lived together), and the cops found out that they had been sold at a pawn shop by a man whose description fit my ex's. He STILL denied it, but the pawn shop cameras showed otherwise."

11."I saw a message preview on her lock screen of a dude heart-reacting to a message from her saying, 'At least you know whenever I'm with him, I'm thinking of you.' We had just returned from a holiday for our anniversary and moved in together."

12."He lied about getting tested and treated for the chlamydia he gave me. He admitted that he never went when I asked, so I told him I was done immediately."

13."The guy she was cheating on me with found out about me. He found me at a bar, told me about it, and bought me a drink. I immediately got on the phone and broke up with her. I'm not going to go into super deep detail, but it was nice to have an honorable dude give me the warning instead of weeks of suspicion. I was about to get an apartment with her and dodged a bullet."

14."He remained active on dating apps after we started dating. We were together for three years."

15."The coworker he was worried I was attracted to? I was. The difference is I never talked to him outside of work-related things and shut him down immediately when he showed interest in me. A girl coworker gave my ex one ounce of attention, and he cheated and left me for her almost immediately. He later regretted it and said the grass isn't always greener. Now he's with her because I wouldn't move back with him, and he didn't want to be lonely. I'm glad I stayed on my side of the lawn. I would never want to be the one responsible for how awful another person feels because I couldn't stay faithful at work. A partner should never have to feel insecure about you going to your job."

16."After she moved in with me, she knew we were tight on money, and she needed to find a job urgently. She claimed to be applying for jobs all the time, but she didn't want me to look over her resume or application letters. Months later, I discovered she never applied to any jobs out of fear of rejection."

17."After two years, he yelled at me that he didn't like or respect my dad, not because he did anything wrong, but because he's native. I guess my mom being white meant I was 'passing enough' for him. He was an abusive POS to me constantly, but when he said that, it just broke something in me. He actually thought I was joking when I packed my stuff and left."

18."He had an affair with my cousin."

19."A few things happened at once that helped me end the relationship. I found his 'secret' Twitter account (he told me he didn't have one, but it was the same username as his Instagram 🙄). On there, he would repeat whatever right-wing alpha-male rhetoric he could find. He thought it was funny. That's not the kind of person I am or choose to associate with, and it was really the beginning of the end."

20."The secret was that he had a pattern of getting into relationships with successful women, marrying them, and then leaving with everything he could get his hands on in four or five years. I learned the hard way."

21."I found an old tape that he had secretly recorded of us having sex when we first started dating in high school. I was still a minor at the time. When I confronted him about it, he tried to convince me that I had known and permitted him to record us. Literally, no. The tape starts before I even enter the house! He was a compulsive liar, and that was the last straw for me."

u/winonaworm

22."He needed a story for his college essay, and he used the trauma I had told him but swapped and put himself in my place. He said he thought it was more compelling. I only learned about it when his mom told me. I emailed the school he was applying to. I'm not sure if they took it seriously, but I figured I shouldn't stick around long enough to find out."

23."She said she was having an affair with Nick Jonas when, in reality, she had just been catfished for like eight years. She still believes they have a thing to this day. I didn't know about it until around four years into the relationship. Things didn't last much longer after that."

24."He left his phone at my place and asked me to bring it to him. I still don't know why, but I opened it (no passcode). He'd left the text message with a picture of another woman's vagina on it."

25."He left his alternate email open on our shared computer. It was the email account he used to hook up with random people on Craigslist."

26."I wanted to surprise her by picking her up from work and taking her out. Imagine how surprised I was when she ran out of work and jumped in my best friend's car."

27.And: "I found out he was married and actually pulled off getting married WHILE WE WERE TOGETHER! He intentionally planned his wedding for when I would be on vacation in Greece. We lived a couple of hours away from each other, and he was a cop, so he worked shifts. I also worked shift work, so it was normal not to see each other for two weeks at a time. That's how he was able to pull it off. But I was able to track down his new wife and told her everything, accompanied with receipts for proof."
