3 Dead After Car Plummets Hundreds of Feet Off California’s Devil's Slide Cliff

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, according to authorities

A vehicle that plunged 400 feet off of the famed Pacific Coast Highway on has resulted in the death of three individuals, according to authorities.

Per the California Highway Patrol, the fatal incident took place on Highway 1 sometime after 11 a.m. local time on Friday, July 26, involving a two-door gray sedan that went off the road and over a cliff. The car ultimately stopped on an embankment south of the Tom Lantos Tunnels, near what's known as the Devil's Slide. The patch of Highway 1, roughly 15 miles south of San Francisco, is known for its hairpin turns and steep seaside cliffs.

Authorities closed down the highway as recovery efforts were underway. At first, they were able to retrieve two bodies from the vehicle. However, a rising tide created “incredibly dangerous” conditions, according to USA Today, forcing the authorities to pause their efforts. The third body was retrieved the next day.

The San Mateo County Coroner's Office confirmed the identities of the victims to PEOPLE: Mohammad Noory, 29, and Angelica Gacho, 28, both from South San Francisco; and Brylyn Aroma, 36, of Fort Riley, Kan.

Following this incident, organizer Zabiullah Ibrahimi set up a GoFundMe to cover Noory’s funeral expenses. According to the GoFundMe, Noory worked as an interpreter for the United States military in Afghanistan. He “achieved Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) for his faithful services” and immigrated to the U.S. in 2021 to “provide a better future for himself and his family.”

Noory’s death “left his entire family and loved ones in mourning,” according to the page. “[He] was the only financial supporter of his family. With the loss of him, his parents and siblings back in [their] home country Afghanistan are not in a good emotional and physical state."

Ibrahimi further noted that "Any contribution to support this family in the toughest moments of their life is greatly appreciated.”

As of July 30, the GoFundMe has raised $12,000 of its $30,000 goal.

California's Highway 1, known as the Pacific Coast Highway, is a popular tourist destination. Over 650 miles long, it’s known for “endless vistas overlooking the Pacific, with plenty of redwood trees and wildlife sightings,” according to tourist site Visit California.
