First Londoners went mad for blossom, and now the city’s Instagrammers have gone hysterical for wisteria.

In springtime, wisteria’s soft purple petals can be seen climbing over buildings all over the capital, painting the town purple.

West Londoners have been particularly spoilt this spring, with wisteria twining its way around the smart white stuccoed villas of Kensington and the mews houses of Notting Hill.

Instagrammers have been taking pictures all over London of the city in full purple bloom.

Wisteria is a climbing plant with beautifully scented flowers in shades of white, blue, purple and pink that flowers between April and June. They can climb to heights of nearly 10m and enjoy being in full sun.

Looking to plant your own wisteria? The best times to plant are spring and autumn – although you’ll have to wait three to four years to see floral results.
