As a week of bridal shows comes to a close in New York, the subsequent days spent poring over the dreamiest dresses have only just begun.

Whether engaged or not, wedding gowns have an addictive quality that can occupy many of us for hours. And while Pippa Middleton's upcoming nuptials - and dress designer revelation - have us on the edge of our seats, this week's instalment of the biannual bridal fashion week showcase is a timely distraction.

Often one of the most anticipated brands showing at bridal fashion week, Marchesa impressed this season with its daring use black throughout the collection.

From deep, delicate laced socks to elegantly inky ribbons and dusky earrings, the New York label added touches of femininity to the splashes of black via bow-tied shoulders, intricately detailed tulle capes and gathered pleats.

Not the only brand adding a gothic edge to its collection this season, models showcasing Vera Wang's SS18 bridal line stepped out with fringed black earrings and dark dramatic floral appliqués accenting bravely-cut designs with revealing shoulders and over-sized sleeves falling past the hand.

Jenny Packham - a brand best-known for its reoccurring place in the Duchess of Cambridge's wardrobe - also plumped for plucky designs, with a red sequined gown fitted with marabou feathered sleeves proving a highlight.
