£300 DWP winter fuel payment has very specific code - how to spot it

Pensioners across the UK are being reminded to keep an eye out for a specific code when their winter fuel payment is deposited in the coming weeks. The valuable winter fuel payment, which can be as much as £300, is designed to assist pensioners with energy bills during the chillier season.

Eligible individuals will have received a letter around October or November detailing the amount they're entitled to. These payments are processed automatically, typically in November or December.

Previously, the winter fuel payment was accessible to all individuals of state pension age, which is currently 66, but recent changes to eligibility criteria by the government mean it's no longer available to millions. Those who qualify for the winter fuel payment should look for a distinct code on their bank statement to confirm receipt of the funds.

In England and Wales, the transaction will appear as the recipient's National Insurance (NI) number followed by " DWP WFP". For example, if you reside in England and your NI number is QQ123456B, then the deposit will be listed as QQ123456B DWP WFP on your bank statement.

Before reaching out to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), those anticipating the winter fuel payment should verify their bank accounts to ensure the payment has been processed. This payment is distributed to state pensioners who are on certain government benefits to help with energy costs throughout the winter months.

Over the winter, households typically consume more energy due to the colder, darker conditions leading to increased use of heating.

The payment is generally made in November or December and is automatic, meaning there's no need to apply. Previously, joint Universal Credit claimants where one member was over the state pension age had to apply to receive the payment, but this group will be paid automatically this year.

To be eligible for this year's payment, you must be of state pension age and receiving one of the following benefits: Pension Credit, Universal Credit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA), Income Support, Child Tax Credit, or Working Tax Credit.

You need to have an active claim for the above benefits during the "qualifying week" - this runs from September 16 to 22 this year.
