This 3D-Printed Car Could Be On The Roads By Next Year

The future has arrived. Scientists at US start-up Local Motors have developed a 3D-printed car that will be road-ready as early as next year.

Using plastic reinforced by carbon fibre, the two-seater can be printed, driven for around five years and then recycled at the end of it. And that’s not its only green credential: the car also runs off a battery so emissions are low.

The bad news is that no amount of racing stripes are going to get the car to hit speeds any higher than 25mph, but Local Motors says it’s working on a higher speed version of the 3D printed car as well.

The slow but steady car is set to hit showroom floors with a price tag of between $18,000 and $30,000 - if it makes it to the UK, that’ll work out at around £12,000 to £20,000, give or take a few taxes.
