4K tablets getting closer, Japanese Display Inc unveils 10.1-inch 3840 x 2160 IPS panel

In the television world, 4K UHD TVs are the next evolutionary step for the technology. However, when it comes to tablet devices, manufacturers are still dabbling with Full HD or slightly higher resolutions.

Bar Panasonic's 20-inch professional Toughpad tablet, 4K has seemed a long way off for mass market brands like Apple and Samsung. Until now, that is.

Japanese Display Inc has unveiled a 10.1-inch IPS LCD display panel with an Ultra HD resolution of 3840 x 2160, built specifically for tablets. It has even begun shipping samples already, with hopes that consumer electronics manufacturers will adopt it in their next wave of premium devices.

"JDI will be pioneering the commercialisation of 4K2K display modules for mobile devices as next-generation flagship models," the company said in a statement.

The panel has a resolution density of 438ppi - the iPad Air's Retina display has 264ppi in comparison - and JDI claims it features a contrast ratio of 1,100:1, viewing angle of 160-degrees and it consumes 2,180mW of power in operation.

Manufacturers using the panel are yet to be revealed.
