'The Bay', 'Cheer', 'Rules of the Game': The 5 best things to watch on TV tonight, Wednesday 12 January

Wednesday's TV highlights include the return of ITV detective drama The Bay, this time with a new actor in the lead role.

Also back for a new series is Netflix docuseries Cheer which will need to address a scandal relating to one of its stars, while BBC One's Rules of the Game continues its look at workplace bullying and abuse.

The Bay - ITV - 9pm

ITV's popular detective drama returns for a new series, this time starring Marsha Thomason in the lead role as Morven Christie's character has left for another job.

The new family liaison officer is plunged into the deep end as she investigates the death of a boxer whose body has been found in the bay and discovers more about his family's secrets.

Thomason's character DS Jenn Townsend also has her own complicated family to navigate as she struggles to settle them into their new home.

Cheer - Netflix

Hit docuseries Cheer is back for a highly anticipated second season, following the cheer squad's rigorous training and skilled performances at Navarro community college.

The new series will have to address a scandal that broke after the first series aired, when teammate Jerry Harris was accused of being involved in receiving child pornography.

Harris is still in prison awaiting trial but disputes the charges, and understandably, the case has rocked the entire close-knit team.

Rules of the Game - BBC One - 9pm

Toxic workplace drama Rules of the Game began last night, starring Maxine Peake as sportswear company COO Sam whose eyes are opened to her office environment following two suspicious deaths of employees.

Continuing the story tonight, new HR director Maya delves into historic events, including workplace bullying and a covered up death from 10 years earlier as Sam becomes wary about the levels she'll go to in trying to clean up the company.

Britain's Most Expensive Houses - Channel 4 - 9pm

Who doesn't love a look around a property they can only dream of being able to afford? Sotheby's realty give a peek behind the scenes of the property market for the most expensive houses in the UK in this documentary series.

Tonight's homes including a London penthouse, a Surrey Hills stunner that was used in Beauty and the Beast and Star Wars, and a Northumberland castle that one realtor is desperate to market because of his ancestors' connection to it - even roping in his mum to swing the owners' decision.

The Repair Shop - BBC One - 8pm

Feel-good series The Repair Shop has a very special item in its workshop tonight as a chair used at King George VI's coronation is brought in by an owner whose grandfather was an usher at the event.

There's also a fascinating story about a woman looking to have her mother's old leather writing case restored to its glory days when she used it as a code breaker at Bletchley Park.
