5 Reasons You Should Be Watching Galavant

Galavant, ABC’s comedy musical extravaganza, had its second season premiere last night, and it reminded me just how much fun the show is. Here are five reasons you should start watching:

1. The catchy musical numbers. Galavant’s songs are written by famed Disney composer Alan Menken, and they’re catchy, hilarious, and just the right amount of irreverent. The choreography is fantastic as well, especially for the large group scenes. Though, fair warning: you will get these songs stuck in your head for days on end.

2. The zany cast of characters. There are heroes, villains, sidekicks, and servants, and the majority of the characters are charmingly narcissistic, regardless of their positions. They’re also blindly unaware of their flaws, which leads to some amusing moments between characters.

3. The cameos. Last season featured Weird Al Yankovic and Ricky Gervais, and last night’s first episode had John Stamos and Kylie Minogue. The show becomes extra enjoyable when a celebrity pops in unexpectedly for a funny line or musical number.

4. The witty dialogue. The show is technically set in medieval times, but that doesn’t stop the characters from using current slang, making already funny moments even more hilarious. The combination of old timey and contemporary phrases leads to dialogue that’s completely unique and unlike anything else on TV.

5. The self-awareness. The brains behind the show are very aware that this second season was unlikely, given the ratings of the first, and they cheerfully bring that knowledge into the show itself. The spectacular first musical number in last night’s premiere referenced the show’s competition, as well as the fact that “many will probably record,” to hilarious effect.

Galavant airs Sundays at 8 on ABC, and the entire first season is available for free on iTunes. Go check it out!
