When you're feeling a bit unwell, it's tempting to ignore the symptoms, brushing them off as a passing bug amidst life's daily demands. Yet, a doctor has emerged with crucial warnings about five specific signs to watch for that could indicate a more serious issue.

In a TikTok video that quickly gathered over 1.7 million views, Dr Khan laid out symptoms that merit a prompt visit to your GP. He said: “Here are five things I definitely want to see you for as a GP.”

First up, Dr Khan noted that if you regularly feel like food or drink gets stuck in your throat, then it’s best to get it inspected. He said: “This is called dysphasia.

"It can sometimes cause coughing, choking or vomiting. Now there are several different causes, but we need to rule out a cancer of the food pipe or the upper parts of the digestive tract.”

The next symptom was also connected to the mouth. He went on: “An unexplained mouth ulcer that has been there for three weeks or more. Mouth cancer can affect anyone, but it’s more common in those who smoke or use alcohol excessively. So please do get that checked."

Number three was "unexplained heavy or drenching night sweats". Dr Khan said: "Yes, I know you can get these from the menopause and that’s OK - that needs to be treated separately - but if you can’t explain those sweats, come and speak to us.”

Explaining number four in the list of symptoms, he continued: "I know new, unexplained lumps should be checked. But, if you have a new lump in your neck, even if it feels like a lymph gland, if it’s more than 1cm or feels hard or rubbery, or remains there for three weeks or more and you can’t explain it, please do get that checked.”

Last but not least, Dr Khan told viewers that unexplained bone pain should always be checked out. He continued: “Especially if you’re over 50, especially in the back, pelvis or rib area. If you don’t remember any kind of injury or movement that can explain it away, get it checked.”
