5 transfers Newcastle United could revisit after summer of disappointment

Newcastle United know their January transfer window could make or break their 2024/25 Premier League campaign. After a disappointing summer window, the Magpies know their squad needs strengthening if they want to realise their Champions League aspirations.

The Toon's public pursuit of Marc Guehi came to a disappointing end prior to the window closing, before a late enquiry for Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga.

Newcastle need strengthening in both areas of the pitch and could well revive their interest in both players come the January window. Eddie Howe and Paul Mitchell have have began planning for the upcoming window according to the Telegraph, with a determination to put the summer issues behind them.

Here Chronicle Live takes a look at the transfers the Magpies could revisit in the January transfer window.

Marc Guehi

The one that got away in the summer, Guehi was Newcastle United's number one transfer target and it's highly likely that they'll revisit this one come January. Come the winter window, the England international will be in the final 18 months of his contract at Selhurst Park, which should have an impact on his asking price.

The £70m fee quoted by Palace seemed overpriced and the Magpies did well not to part with such a fee. It's clear Howe is a fan of the defender, but in the same breath, the Toon will want to avoid another drawn out saga in the winter with a smaller window to conclude negotiations.

Liverpool and Chelsea have been linked with a move for Guehi and Newcastle will want to conclude a deal quickly if they do go back in for the centre-half.

Edmond Tapsoba

Alternatively, the Magpies could make an approach for Bayer Leverkusen centre-half Edmond Tapsoba. Similarly to Guehi, the 25-year-old is highly sought after.

The likes of Arsenal have been linked with the Burkina Faso central defender, who won the Bundesliga title with Xabi Alonso's side last season. He's spoken about wanting to play in the Premier League in the past and said his plan was to stay with the reigning Bundesliga champions this season, but Newcastle could tempt him come the winter transfer window.

He'd be an astute signing for Howe's side, with Champions League and European experience under his belt. At a reported asking price of £45m, his signing would allow the Magpies to invest into other areas of the pitch.

Axel Disasi

Another alternative to Guehi was Chelsea defender Axel Disasi. The French centre-back was linked with the Magpies prior to his move to Stamford Bridge, but opted for a move to Stamford Bridge instead.

Now with Mitchell at the helm, the Magpies were linked with the 26-year-old defender, who the sporting director knows from his time with AS Monaco. Chelsea find themselves with a bloated squad and the French international is yet to feature in the Premier League.

Having paid £38m for Disasi, Chelsea would likely want a similar fee if they were to cash in on the defender in January.

Bryan Mbuemo

Brentford forward Bryan Mbuemo was a tentative summer transfer link with Newcastle as they look to strengthen their options up front. The Bees value the forward at £50m, with no agreement yet over a new deal despite talks.

The 25-year-old scored nine times in 25 appearances to help fill the void left by Ivan Toney. The winger was linked with a move to St. James' Park in the summer, though no official bid was made, and his contract is set to expire in the summer of 2026.

Brentford do have the option for another season, which is why the Premier League side have set such a high asking price.

Anthony Elanga

Newcastle were reportedly keen on Elanga in the midst of their summer PSR debacle, but the Tricky Trees were unwilling to sanction a departure for one of their key players. The Magpies made a late enquiry for the Swedish winger and Howe is understood to be a fan of the former Manchester United man.

He remains a potential target in the January transfer window with the right-wing area of the pitch an area of the pitch crying out for improvement..
