More than 500 cannabis plants have been seized from a property in Sheffield following a police raid.

South Yorkshire Police officers from the Gleadless Neighbourhood Policing Team carried out a warrant at a property on Overend Close on Wednesday, November 13, as part of Operation Steel. The police forced entry and found a cannabis farm with a total of 505 plants.

Electricity had been bypassed and Northern Powergrid were called in to make the house safe. The plants were then seized by the police and destroyed. The police investigation is ongoing as officers work to identify suspects.

Operation Steel is aimed at targeting repeat offenders in Sheffield, as well as to protect vulnerable people and provide reassurance through patrols. Inspector Amy Mellor, of the South West Neighbourhood Team, said: "Warrants such as Wednesday's are often made possible by community intelligence.

"You can play a key role in our fight against drugs if you know what to look out for. Warning signs of cannabis setups, like the one we have raided today, include a powerful and sickly aroma coming from a property, frequent visitors at a property at all times of the day, noise coming from fans, and unusual adaptations, such as lots of wiring coming from a building."

If you have any concerns about properties which may be being used to make or grow drugs, you can contact the police by ringing 101. You can remain completely anonymous by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
