6 Boy-and-Girl Shared Bedroom Ideas for Keeping the Peace While Staying Stylish

From increased empathy to better sleep, there’s a wealth of benefits when siblings share a bedroom. But how do you handle decorating said room—especially when you’ve got a boy and a girl trying to cohabit there peacefully? We checked in with Alexa Battista, a public relations specialist for Wayfair, for some decor ideas everyone can get behind. She told us, “One of the easiest ways to achieve a gender-neutral aesthetic is to choose soft tones such as white, gray or calming shades of yellow, along with light patterns including stripes and geometric lines. This combination will add charm and creativity to a space without leaning toward a specific gender.” She also sings the virtue of peel-and-stick wallpaper, as well as signs, wall decor and pictures that speak to each kid’s personality.

Want some inspo? Check out these six smart ideas for boy-and-girl shared rooms that are as stylish as they are conflict minimizing.

1. Opt for light and neutral

You can never go wrong with whites, grays and dreamy teals. This gender-neutral room feels like the perfect hideaway for a conspiratorial brother-and-sister duo.

2. Or dark and monochrome

The kids can spruce up their beds with stuffed animals and throws, but we love this palette of black, white and gray (courtesy of Curio Interior Design Studio).

Get the look: Kavka Designs duvet cover ($96); House of Hampton table lamp ($115); Williston Forge letter icon ($100)

3. Go Woodsy

How charming is this little Wes Anderson–inspired number from Isabel Ladd Interiors? A word to the wise when employing twin beds: Make sure your mattresses are the same height so that the effect is orderly and not cockeyed.

Get the look: Rosalind Wheeler bed ($230); Kavka duvet cover set ($96); "The Mountains Are Calling" Framed Print ($78)

4. Choose a Poppy Animal Print

You know what boys and girls can always agree on? Llamas.

Get the look: Wrought Studio quilt set ($93); La La Llama Embroidered Pillows ($33); Bungalow Rose llama throw pillow ($88)

5. Stick with One Pattern in Different Colors

If your kids insist on the pink-and-blue thing, tie the room together by getting one bedding pattern in two different colorways. Keep things consistent with complementary toy storage bins.

Get the look: Viv + Rae platform bed with drawers ($370); 3 Sprouts laundry hamper ($64); The Conestoga Trading Co. area rug ($430)

6. Set Up a Room Divider

When all else fails, set up a retractable room divider and let each kid get free rein over his or her side of the space. How fun is this eclectic setup?

Get the look: Wrought Studio platform bed ($94); Shopkins peel-and-stick wall decals ($14); Jaxx beanbag chair ($122)
