The best sofas you can buy Simon Bevan for GH x DFS

We all know that a sofa is one of the biggest investment pieces you can buy for your home. Choosing the right one can really transform your living room, so it pays to do your research before taking the plunge.

To help inspire you, we asked Good Housekeeping's Homes & Gardens Director Carolyn Bailey, Style and Interiors Editor James Cunningham as well as Style and Interiors Director Sarah Keady, to reveal their best sofa recommendations for 2023.

Whether you're looking for a large corner sofa or a small two-seater, we can promise there's a sofa here for every home – no matter your style, budget or the size of your living space.

Here are the best sofas you can buy right now, according to our interiors experts...

Style and Interiors Director Sarah says: "The new GH Emmeline sofa with DFS is not only incredibly stylish but comfortable too — it has deep, plump seat cushions and has large sofa arm pads you can sink into. It also looks great on its own— I love cushions but once I am on the couch I end up taking most of them off! Otherwise, you could just add in a few favourites you already have.

"I really like the attention to detail on the new Emmeline sofa. The bolsters, wooden feet and angular arms all help to create an elegant shape — I love mid-century inspired shapes so I am a big fan. Equally, I don’t have a huge living room, so the 3 seater is a perfect size to get us all on there without dominating the space.

"Lastly, from a practical perspective, a sofa needs to be a place where you can relax and don’t have to worry about the odd spill. So, the fact that it has the GH seal of approval for stain and durability is a big draw for me."

Style and Interiors Director Sarah says: "I have this two seater sofa in my kitchen. Its more upright than the one in my living room but it's super stylish and both compact and comfy. Ideal for kicking back and relaxing for a post dinner family catch up."

Homes & Gardens Director Carolyn says: "This British made sofa looks both comfortable and elegant and its timeless shape means it won’t date."

Style and Interiors Director Sarah says: "We’ve had this on a few shoots-including one for GH - and it is really deep for that extra squidge factor. Once you sit down you won't want to get up again, so it's ideal for those nights cuddled up on the sofa. The Cucumber colour in velvet is modern yet understated."

Style and Interiors Editor James says: "Designed by the in-house style experts at Heal’s and manufactured entirely in Britain, the Richmond sofa is as much about style as it is substance. With a sophisticated silhouette and measured proportions, the sofa is available in seventy smart fabrics from decadent velvet to on-trend linen."

Style and Interiors Editor James says: "With its elegant button-back detailing, the Chadwick is a pretty choice that still has classic appeal. The generously filled feather seat cushions are key to the sofa’s comfort credentials, while the low, gently curved arms mean there is more space to stretch out."

Style and Interiors Editor James says: "Mid-century styling meets modern day comfort with this great-value design from Dunelm. Sure to become the focal point in any sitting room, the sofa is available in four different colours – I particularly like the upbeat Old Gold hue, which will bring a sense of sunshine into your space."

Style and Interiors Editor James says: "The low arms of this sofa mean that it feels even bigger, giving more room to stretch out. Very cleverly, Oka also stock separate loose covers for this design meaning that the upholstery can be changed easily over the years."

Homes & Gardens Director Carolyn says: "This super-cute design is perfect for small spaces and will create a statement in any room. Why not try it in a bedroom or office?"

Homes & Gardens Director Carolyn says: "I fell in love with this sofa when I visited the new Soho Home store a few weeks ago! It is super-smart in luxurious velvet, is extremely comfortable and the turned legs make it look elegant. I also love the fact it’s made in England."

Homes & Gardens Director Carolyn says: "‘The new ANYDAY range from John Lewis has furniture at rock bottom prices – this tailored, compact sofa with clean lines would work well in small spaces and would make a great addition an office or kitchen."
