There's heartbreak aplenty in Holby City next week as Serena and Cameron get more tragic news about Bernie and Kian reveals a secret from his past.
Here's a round-up of the biggest stories you can look forward to.
1. A blast from the past delivers more bad news
Following the bombshell about Bernie being missing in action, Cameron and Serena are still none the wiser about her fate a week later. Unfortunately, their worst fears are confirmed when Alex returns to the hospital and delivers the news they’d been dreading.
Viewers were introduced to army medic Alex (played by former Waterloo Road star Heather Peace) back in 2016, when the show started to explore Bernie’s past. Shortly after Alex turned up three years ago, fans learned that she'd had an affair with Bernie while they were on duty in Afghanistan but Bernie had ultimately ended things to focus on her family and start afresh in Holby.
Tuesday’s episode will see Alex make another appearance as she arrives at Holby looking for Cameron, but she’s bringing a very dark cloud with her.
2. Cameron struggles to cope
Bernie’s disappearance was always going to impact Cameron the most, but he’s left further distressed by Alex’s revelations.
As he struggles to accept what’s happened to his mum, Cameron refuses help from a persistent Alex and ends up turning to Serena for support. Have the tissues at the ready – you’ll need them.
3. Serena makes a shock discovery
Much like Cameron, Serena will also be hit hard by Bernie’s tragic fate and struggles to keep hold of her emotions when she’s given a gift from beyond the grave.
Determined to prioritise Cameron’s needs over her own, Serena later arranges a second meeting with Nicky – who is adamant she should have a say in Bernie’s send-off.
But as Serena questions why Nicky feels the need to be so involved, she's not prepared for what she discovers next…
4. Kian reveals a sad secret
There’s even more heartbreak on the Holby wards next Tuesday, as the show starts to delve into Kian Madani’s sad backstory. Kian will instantly raise concern among his colleagues when he isn’t his usual cheeky, chirpy self in next week’s scenes, but it’s only when he becomes overly obsessed with a patient called Sunny that the tragic truth comes to light.
Sunny is an old friend of Kian who has turned up at the hospital with some worrying symptoms, but it couldn't have come at a worse time for the doctor – who is already struggling to cope on the anniversary of a personal tragedy.
As Kian becomes determined to save Sunny at whatever cost, his behaviour sparks major concern with his colleague Nicky, who correctly predicts that there is more to it than meets the eye. As Nicky tries to get to the bottom of what’s going on, she is thrown when Sunny mentions Kian’s wife Vanessa – someone he has never mentioned before.
After deciding to confront Kian later on, Nicky is shocked when she realises the full extent of what he’s been hiding. What is it? And will she support him?
5. Nicky’s dilemma
As Nicky grows concerned about Kian’s strange behaviour, she finds herself caught in the crossfire when he asks her for a massive favour.
Having vowed to treat Sunny before the day is out, Kian struggles to convince his colleague Jac that she needs urgent treatment and eventually turns to Nicky for help instead.
With Nicky keen to get all the experience possible, Kian uses this to his advantage when he asks her to assist him operate in an unused theatre. Aware that Sunny's condition doesn't need urgent medical attention, Nicky faces divided loyalties as she wrestles with what to do. Will she agree or not?
6. Hanssen faces more doubts
Hanssen may have started to bond with his adorable grandson Oskar, but he’ll be left with fresh doubts over the youngster’s future when he gets some news.
After learning that Oskar’s mum Sarah still isn’t ready to have him back, Hanssen becomes determined to find an alternative care solution – much to the concern of his friend Sacha.
Confused as to why Hanssen is so opposed to raising Oskar himself, Sacha attempts to reach out to him and urges him to reconsider his options. However, it's only after the two men join forces to treat a desperately ill patient with a criminal father that Hanssen reveals his true fears.
As he opens up to Sacha, Hanssen explains that with his family history, he believes that he shouldn’t be the one looking after Oskar. He also reveals his uncertainty over whether nature or nurture will have a greater effect on his grandson. Can Sacha make him see sense?
7. Chloe gets some news about Evan
After her shocking discoveries in yesterday’s episode (July 16), Chloe is keen to move on with her life without Evan next and is therefore pleased to get some welcome news in regards to his future at the hospital.
When Chloe arrives for her shift, she is relieved when Dom tells her that Evan didn’t turn up for his consultant’s interview after all. But have we really seen the last of him?
Holby City airs these scenes on Tuesday, July 23 at 8pm on BBC One.
