The story-driven nature of soap means that couples are making up and breaking up on a weekly basis, sometimes regardless of their popularity with fans. So now that we're three days into 2018, we can't help thinking about those much-loved pairings who really should be together… but sadly aren't.
Could we see any of this lot back together before the year is over?
1. Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle (Emmerdale)
Well, here's a couple that we know will definitely be finding their way back to each other within the next few months. It's been a bleak time for Robron fans as they've seen their favourite characters drift so far apart that a believable reunion had started to seem impossible.
Fortunately, Emmerdale chiefs have promised us a summer wedding for their resident supercouple, tipped to be even bigger and better than their first ceremony. And surely the writers are already paving the way for that, with Robert and Aaron both united in the plan to save Adam Barton this week?
Robert and Aaron's storylines always provoke plenty of discussion, both good and bad, but one thing that can never be doubted is the unrivalled on-screen chemistry between Ryan Hawley and Danny Miller. It'll also be interesting to see what direction they go in once they're together again – will it be #RobronRebooted?
2. Ste Hay and Harry Thompson (Hollyoaks)
Being honest, our first choice for Ste's love life will always be #Stendan, but we're also realistic, and there's no signs of Emmett J Scanlan reprising his legendary role as Brendan Brady at the moment.
With that in mind, we reckon it's high time for the writers to resurrect the 'Starry' pairing after so many months apart. The sinister 'Who Killed Amy?' case sent the popular pair their separate ways when Harry confessed to the crime, unaware that Duncan from Blue was the real culprit.
Despite the small matter of a murder coming between them, we can't shake the feeling that Ste and Harry are much better together than apart. Let's face it, neither of them are making too many smart life choices without each other at the moment, are they? Could we see a refreshed 'Starry' this year once Ryan's guilt is exposed?
3. Cain and Moira Dingle (Emmerdale)
Fans of Emmerdale's 'Coira' pairing have had to wait even longer than Robron's supporters to see their favourite couple back together. Despite many ups and downs, there's a magnetic pull that always seems to bring Cain and Moira back into each other's orbits, providing electric scenes whenever they share screen time.
Emmerdale's top boss Iain MacLeod has always hinted that he'll reunite Coira eventually, naming Moira as the love of Cain's life. (Soz, Harriet!) So, which Emmerdale couple will end up back together first – Coira or Robron? The race is on...
4. Peter Barlow and Carla Connor (Coronation Street)
Corrie star Chris Gascoyne recently predicted that the show will revisit Peter Barlow's old chemistry with Carla Connor, even though he's currently settled at The Rovers with current partner Toyah. Chris reckoned it's what the fans will want to see, and although some of Carla's ardent supporters are reluctant to watch her revisiting old ground, we can't help feeling that the Corrie favourite is on the right track with this one.
Peter and Carla's relationship always provided plenty of gripping drama for the show, and Peter has never been able to resist a damsel in distress. Once word starts to spread about Carla's illness, could Peter be the one who comforts her?
5. Lauren Branning and Peter Beale (EastEnders)
Josh Hemmings may have miraculously managed not to inherit the Willmott-Brown evil gene, but we still can't help thinking that he's not really the right guy for Lauren Branning. The Brannings' connections with the Willmott-Brown clan have only caused misery for everyone – hardly a great foundation for a solid relationship.
Lauren's partnership with Peter Beale was far more popular during their time on screen together, so even though Ian's son isn't actually part of the cast anymore, why not send Lauren off to New Zealand to reunite with him when she leaves the Square? Perhaps it could even pave the way for Jacqueline Jossa to return as Lauren with a newly-recast Peter a year or so down the line…
6. Rhona Goskirk and Paddy Kirk (Emmerdale)
We like that Emmerdale hasn't rushed into reuniting Rhona and Paddy after their turbulent couple of years, but all the signs are there that they're an 'endgame' couple. While Paddy has moved on with Chas Dingle recently, those two are far better off as friends rather than lovers.
While we'd never condone cheating, we'd like to think that Paddy has learned his lessons after taking Rhona for granted when he started an affair with Tess. Rhona also seems ready to forgive him, but the big question is what'll get Chas out of the way.
Maybe DS Wise could return to steal Chas away now he's been replaced in Hollyoaks? That'd certainly be one way for Paddy to get a taste of his own medicine...
7. David Platt and Maria Connor (Coronation Street)
Okay, so it's probably cheating to include a fake couple who were only "together" as a joke to annoy Gail, but we loved David and Maria's jokey "relationship" last year. So much so that we even came up with a list of 7 sure-fire reasons why they'd make a great couple.
Jack P Shepherd and Samia Longchambon have an easy chemistry in all of their scenes, so we're hoping that Maria will step in as a new love interest whenever it all goes wrong for David and Shona. Surely Killer Clayton has to drive those two apart at some point?
