The 7 Hair Products That Are Keeping Me (& My Curly Hair) Sane During Quarantine

I’ll admit that spending way more time at home has made me fall into a lazy routine and neglect my hair. My motivation just wasn’t there, and sadly, my hair got the worst of it. But enough was enough, and one serious inner haircare pep talk and online shopping spree later, I finally hit the buy it button and invested in a few products to bring my curls back to life. And my new buys worked so well, I had to share. Here, seven curly hair tools and accessories that have kept me sane.

1. Scalp Massager

We’re all accustomed to washing our hair (how often is another question entirely), but how well are we really cleaning our scalp? Since discovering this scalp massager from Stands, I’ve never gone back to relying on my fingers to get the job done. Once you apply the shampoo to your head, use the silicone bristles to work the product into your hair and repair those neglect areas. You’ll have a cleaner, healthier scalp (and a much-needed at-home salon massage).

2. Satin Scrunchies

I’m constantly grabbing a scrunchie to tie my hair into the classic pineapple look when I’m getting ready for a Zoom call, workout sesh or getting ready to hit the hay. But I realized that silk or satin scrunchies are especially wonderful because they leave my curly hair frizz-free. These Kitsch stain scrunchies are so easy to slip off without getting tangled in my hair (and forever lost in the curl void). Sure, scrunchies have already made their comeback, but I had no idea how game-changing the silky materials could be until I tried them.

3. Head Scarves

OK, most of the time I’m too lazy to do my hair. But instead of leaving it up to a messy bun or baseball cap, I’ve started reaching for a head scarf instead. Searching the web for head scarf styles and creative ways to wear them put me on a new journey figuring out how to cover up my very dry, very frizzy bad hair days in a chic way. I've discovered that silk head scarves are the way to go and the bigger, the better with holding even the thickest manes. While head scarves were once a way to hide three-day curls, they’re not a staple in my everyday WFH wardrobe and now I’m counting down the days until I can wear one to the next outside shindig.

4. Detangler Brush

If you ever need to get rid of those pesky knots and tangles, a detangling hairbrush can help without the constant tug and pull in the shower. But why a detangler brush over a regular one? The flexible, soft bristles make it easier to run it through your hair minus any breakage or tear. Plus, many have an easier grip to tackle even the thickest, frizziest curls. Before, I relied on my fingers to get tangles out and help to work the products through my hair. Now, I run my new Brush with the Best brush through my hair right after putting a leave-in conditioner and marvel at the curl definition it leaves behind.

5. Spray Bottle

Your skin loves a good a facial mist, but guess what? So does your curly hair. Investing in a spray bottle like this one has hydrated my curls and brought them back from their dry, lackluster state and I can’t believe I didn’t have one before. Whether I use it throughout the week (mixing the whole bottle with water and 3-5 drops of the oils of my choice) after a frizz-inducing cardio workout or between putting products in my hair after a wash, the lightweight spray bottle has worked wonders when it comes to making my curls look moisturized and healthy again.

6. Hair Clips

If you’re like me, you have a lot of hair. Which means sectioning that hair can be a challenge. Sometimes wrapping them in knots or using scrunchies becomes too much of a hassle, but my new clips have made it easier to divide my hair and focus on the pieces I need to without tangling, mixing in with a section or be in the way while I’m putting on makeup. I’m way more likely to go through my routine now that this key step is so much simpler.

7. Silk Pillowcase

Every curly gal should invest in a silk pillowcase. Not only does it reduce hair breakage and keep hair tangle-free, it can also protect your skin from sleep lines and wrinkles. Every night I can fall asleep on a Silk pillowcase knowing my hair is being taken care of. I just wrap my hair up, do my nighttime skincare routine, journal for a bit before laying my head down and let the pillowcase go to work on keeping my curls frizz-free.
