This week on Casualty, Rash Masun has a very difficult return to work, while Ethan Hardy's brand new story kicks off when he bumps into an old friend.

Here's a full collection of the seven biggest storylines you can look forward to:

1. Ethan struggles to cope

Unsurprisingly, Ethan is being haunted by harrowing memories of last week's explosion when we catch up with him this week and is experiencing some very traumatic dreams and flashbacks.

Despite wanting to use work as a distraction, Ethan's struggles don't go unnoticed by his colleagues and he's eventually ordered to go home.

Forced to admit defeat, Ethan prepares to leave but is stopped in his tracks when he bumps into an old uni friend called Theo on his way out. Theo comes armed with a case that could prove to be the very distraction Ethan needs, but could also turn his life upside down in the process.

2. He's thrown into a dilemma...

We've already confirmed that Ethan is about to take centre stage in a big, new story – and it will kick off when Theo turns up in Saturday's scenes.

Desperate to help his ill daughter Effie, Theo comes looking for Ethan in the hope that he will be able to pull some strings and get her on a trial to treat her cystic fibrosis.

Already unsure he can be of any use, Ethan becomes even more reluctant to get involved when he learns that Effie hasn't been entirely honest with her dad about her condition.

3. ...And later takes some big risks

Once alone with Ethan, Effie reveals that her lungs have declined, meaning she wouldn't be eligible for the trial and the odds of getting a transplant are slim. Although Effie insists that she's accepted her fate, she urges Ethan to keep this from her dad – fearing he won’t cope.

As Ethan is drawn into Effie’s lie, he ends up taking some very big risks to try and help her. Effie has already been confirmed as Ethan's new love interest, but is he getting too emotionally involved already?

4. Rash has a difficult first day back

After the loss of his mum, Rash plans on postponing his return to the ED, but soon gets embroiled in a case with a young baby who is in desperate need of care.

When baby Evie is later diagnosed with sepsis, it's down to Rash to calm her mum Holly down and talk her through the next devastating steps. As Rash reflects on his own recent tragedy, he urges Holly her to use this time to say goodbye to her daughter – in the way she wasn’t able to with her late husband.

At the end of a difficult first day back, Rash is still torn over what to do over his absent girlfriend Gem, but as he heads home to his father, it's clear that his priorities are at home right now.

5. Meet Mason

Casualty will welcome another new face in the ED this week as F1 doctor Mason turns up for his first shift. Victor Oshin has been cast in the role of Mason, who is abrupt, cocky, over-confident and sees himself as a bit of a flier.

Therefore, it wont come as much of a surprise that Mason– and his cocktail of slightly unsavoury qualities – starts rubbing his colleagues up the wrong way almost immediately.

But when he later throws an already-stressed Rash under the bus, could Mason have made his first enemy?

6. Duffy makes a decision

Casualty will also be revisiting Duffy's story this week, as she faces up to the sad realities of her dementia diagnosis. As Charlie and Duffy begin a difficult conversation about her future, they approach the delicate topic of a power of attorney agreement for when she starts to decline.

Overwhelmed by what potentially lies ahead, Duffy struggles to cope when later alone at home – full of fear that she will lose her mind. By the end of the day, Duffy has made a big decision about her future, but what is it?

7. Charlie is torn over his responsibilities

Caught up supporting a patient, Charlie misses five calls from a distraught Duffy as he struggles to juggle his responsibilities to his wife and his job.

When Charlie eventually arrives home, he realises the extent of Duffy's distress and does his best to comfort her. But how will he react to Duffy's decision?

Casualty airs these scenes on Saturday, August 24 at 9.20pm on BBC One.
