From Digital Spy

This year will see a whole host of sequels released in cinemas from Avengers: Endgame and Frozen 2 to IT: Chapter Two and, erm, A Dog's Purpose 2.

Sequels have become such a massive part of the film industry that you'd be forgiven for thinking that every major star has been in at least one – but it's actually not the case. After all, it took until 2018 for Meryl Streep and Denzel Washington to star in a sequel to one of their own movies for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and The Equalizer 2.

So we thought we'd have a look at some of the most notable stars who have yet to star in a sequel – and by that we specifically mean a sequel to one of their own movies, and not just a sequel in general.

1. Leonardo DiCaprio

Despite making his movie debut in horror sequel Critters 3 (talk about inauspicious beginnings), Leonardo DiCaprio has avoided sequels ever since.

A big part of that is likely that most of DiCaprio's choices don't exactly lend themselves to a sequel – although there was technically a Titanic 2. Even for the ones that could have led to a sequel such as The Departed (based on Hong Kong crime drama Infernal Affairs which had two sequels), DiCaprio's character didn't last until the end credits.

2. Daniel Day-Lewis

Every other star on this list could end up starring in a sequel in the future, but not Daniel Day-Lewis as he retired after Phantom Thread and, at the moment at least, it seems to be sticking.

Again, we can't really see a situation where Day-Lewis would have done a sequel to any of his movies, as much as we'd have wanted to see Daniel Plainview return on his quest to drink everyone's milkshakes.

3. Jodie Foster

Ten years after her breakthrough role, Jodie Foster had a chance to return as Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs sequel Hannibal, only to turn it down. She said in 2005 that the "official" reason she never returned was that she was doing another movie (the cancelled Flora Plum).

Since then, there hasn't been a chance for Foster to reprise any of her roles, although there might have been hope for a Hotel Artemis sequel – until its poor box-office run likely put an end to that.

Some of the Digital Spy staff are still holding out for Spike Lee's Inside Man 2 (he wants to make it, too) but a low-budget sequel sans Foster (and Lee) is already in the pipeline, alas.

4. Matthew McConaughey

One of Matthew McConaughey's earliest roles was as the brilliantly-named Vilmer Slaughter in Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, but like DiCaprio, it seems to have put him off sequels.

The most likely sequel he could have appeared in was Magic Mike XXL, but apparently he wasn't in the plans for the follow-up. Other than that, it's hard to see where he could have reprised a role, except potentially in The Dark Tower – but we all know how that would-be franchise turned out...

5. Michelle Pfeiffer

OK, we know Michelle Pfeiffer will soon have to be taken off this list with her expected appearance in Avengers: Endgame, but she still counts. Technically it's not a direct Ant-Man and The Wasp sequel either, so we could bend the rules a bit anyway.

Despite appearing in the likes of Grease 2 and Batman Returns, Pfeiffer hasn't yet done a sequel to any movies she's appeared in. Sadly, this means we were robbed of a her Catwoman solo movie which, surely, would have been much better than the one we ended up with.

6. Russell Crowe

Russell Crowe might have been involved in the movie that launched the Worlds of DC with Man of Steel, but his Jor-El didn't even get a flashback in Batman v Superman – and that's probably as close as he's got to a sequel.

It's not for lack of trying, though, as Crowe has appeared in the likes of Robin Hood and The Mummy, both of which were meant to lead to sequels before various factors got in the way. We're holding out hope that Shane Black sorts out a Nice Guys sequel – or maybe Maximus will end up popping up in Gladiator 2?

7. Richard Gere

He starred in The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in 2015, yet Richard Gere hasn't appeared in a sequel to any of his own movies.

Nowadays, you wouldn't be surprised if there was a follow-up to box office hits and beloved classics Pretty Woman and An Officer and a Gentleman. But it wasn't to be, so you'll just have to imagine what happened to the dashing Edward Lewis and Zack Mayo next.
