7 rescued from Croydon fire as firefighters tackle blaze in block of flats

Seven people were rescued from a burning block of flats. Part of the complex’s first floor was ablaze during the blaze on Church Road, Norwood.

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters dealt with the fire at around 3.30am this morning (Wednesday, January 22).

Crews used special 32-metre ladders to save those stuck inside.

There were no reported cases of the rescued needing to go to hospital.

Crews were called in from West Norwood, Woodside, and Norbury.

A London Fire Brigade (LFB) spokesperson said: “Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters have been tackling a fire at a block of flats on Church Road in Upper Norwood. Part of the first floor was alight.

"Seven people were rescued from the building by firefighters using ladders and were treated on scene by London Ambulance Service.

“One of the Brigade's 32-metre turntable ladders is being used at the scene to help fight the fire from above.

"Control Officers took the first call at 3.33am and mobilised crews from West Norwood, Woodside, Norbury and surrounding fire stations to the scene.”
