Warner Bros has big ambitions for the DCEU, so it should come as no surprise that Justice League introduces a load of threads to be picked up further down the line.

From villainous supergroups to unhappy Atlantean families, here's how Zack Snyder's movie sets up the future of DC's films.

(Warning: Contains spoilers for Justice League)

1. Injustice Gang

Aka Lex Luthor's "a league of our own". The post-credits scene reveal a new alliance between Jesse Eisenberg's twitchy genius and Joe Manganiello's assassin Deathstroke.

There's no doubt that a team of villains (usually known as the Injustice Gang) will be popping up in the Justice League's future – potentially with Jared Leto's Joker in tow. Madonna and baseball bats optional.

2. Superman lives

Justice League teases the implications of Superman's resurrection, but doesn't really follow up on that. Judging by the doom-and-gloom headlines following his death, the world will probably be very happy to have Kal-El back.

Future movies might explore any fallout from his risky revival. And Clark Kent will still have to explain how he's coincidentally back from the dead too and sniffing around for his old Daily Planet job.

3. Aquaman's mummy issues

The film hints at threads that will no doubt be picked up in Aquaman's 2018 solo movie. He's clearly not happy about being abandoned by his mum (Queen Atlanna, who will be played by Nicole Kidman), but Mera (Amber Heard) hints that she had a very good reason for hiding him from their fellow Atlanteans.

As for Mera, Justice League apparently shows her and Aquaman's first meeting, so we seriously hope they aren't married yet as in the comics. We're expecting that Arthur Curry's return to Atlantis is not going to go smoothly.

4. Darkseid

Steppenwolf's master, the self-proclaimed 'God of Evil', was hinted at back in Batman v Superman, where Bruce Wayne has a vision of the future where his omega symbol was carved into the Earth.

Steppenwolf mentions Darkseid in one of his many monologues, and it seems a safe bet that wherever the villain escaped to, Darkseid was there. And he might be starting to take an interest in these superpowered upstarts who could beat his minion.

5. The Flash we know and love

Barry Allen begins the film as a loner living in what appears to be an old abandoned warehouse and holding down multiple (unspecified) jobs while he tries to get a criminal justice degree and help his wrongfully accused dad (Watchmen's Billy Crudup) get out of prison.

But by the end of the film, he has a 'small' job in a crime lab, paving the way for a Barry much more like Grant Gustin in the Flash TV series. Cutesy team of allies optional.

6. Cyborg's metamorphosis

Cyborg's story in Justice League centres around his uncertainty about his Mother Box-induced transformation. He's developing new powers all the time, and in the epilogue we see him altering the appearance of his metal bodyparts.

But answers as to the exact nature of his metamorphosis weren't exactly given in the movie. Will he be able to control his powers and come to terms with his new, not entirely human life? Stay tuned to find out.

7. Wonder Woman steps out

Wonder Woman may not have completely turned her back on humanity as she suggested in Batman v Superman, but she's not been out fighting monsters and saving civilians for all the world to see.

Diana has been keeping a low profile since Steve Trevor died, but thanks to the Justice League shenanigans, she's very much in the public eye. She'd better be getting as much love from the public as Superman by the time we see her again.
