Valtteri Bottas pips Lewis Hamilton to 70th Anniversary Grand Prix pole in thrilling qualifying session

Another week, another Mercedes one-two in qualifying. It is no wonder their rivals are trying to nobble them off the track. They cannot get close to them on it.

The row over Racing Point’s ‘copying’ of last year’s Mercedes escalated on Saturday, with five teams now declaring an intention to appeal the FIA stewards’s ruling in the hope of securing a harsher sentence and possibly dragging Mercedes into things.

For those who have not been following, Racing Point were docked 15 points in the constructors' championship and fined 400,000 euros (£360,000) on Friday, for illegally 'copying' Mercedes parts. That verdict, however, allowed them to continue running those parts, hence their rivals’ frustration.

The revelation in the report that Mercedes handed over technical information to Racing Point in January this year, a few days after it became illegal to do so, has also not gone unnoticed. It seems incredibly unlikely they might  be punished. The stewards made a point of saying that they deemed Mercedes' actions to be an insignificant breach of the sporting regulations. But still.

It may be their rivals' only hope of stopping them this year. On track the Brackley team continue to leave them all in the dust, albeit it was not the usual order of things in qualifying on Saturday.

Lewis Hamilton declared himself “happy” for his team mate Valtteri Bottas, who pipped him to pole, and for his Mercedes team who secured a one-two for Sunday’s 70th Anniversary Grand Prix.

But there was absolutely no disguising the disappointment in his voice.

Hamilton has never been one to hide his emotions. After missing out on a 92nd career pole by just six hundredths of a second, the six-times world champion was noticeably downbeat in his press conference. Even when he is leading the championship by 30 points after four races, Hamilton demands more of himself.

The 35 year-old’s disappointment on Saturday could be Formula 1’s gain on Sunday. The race down to Abbey on lap 1 is going to be fascinating with Hamilton trying to pass Bottas and grab an early lead of the race.

Last weekend Bottas “chickened out” of making a move on Hamilton at the first corner, in the words of BBC commentator Jolyon Palmer. It will be interesting to watch them with roles reversed.

Behind them, on a day when temperatures are expected once again to hit the mid-30s, there are plenty of interesting sub-plots.

First among them is Nico Hulkenberg. Racing Point’s stand-in driver - who has replaced Sergio Perez for a second successive weekend after the Mexican failed to shake his bout of coronavirus - took a quite brilliant third spot on the grid for Sunday’s race. The German finished three tenths up on his team mate Lance Stroll despite just six practice sessions and this only his second qualifying session since last year. It was not a good look for Stroll, but it did show what Hulkenberg is capable of, and also underlined how good this Racing Point car actually is.

Fifty-odd laps of Silverstone will be a challenge for the German’s neck, but he may never get a better chance of securing that podium finish which has eluded him on his previous 177 starts.

“I was much more comfortable than last week,” admitted Hulkenberg, who was flown in at the 11th hour last weekend after Perez tested positive, staying up half the night on the Thursday for a seat fit and some time on the Racing Point simulator . “Last week was really extreme. This week I was much better prepared. I was pretty confident we could make it into the top 10 but [P3] was a bit of a surprise.”

Starting behind Hulkenberg this on the grid afternoon will Red Bull's Max Verstappen, with Renault's Daniel Ricciardo fifth, ahead of the second Racing Point of Lance Stroll.

Ferrari’s woes continue. Charles Leclerc starts eighth while Sebastian Vettel once again failed to make it into Q3. The four-time world champion starts 12th. They are unlikely to be troubling the frontrunners from there, although the high temperatures and softer compounds of Pirelli tyre this week could shake things up. Drivers tried to get away with making one stop last week and ran into trouble, so expect at least two stops per driver.

It will likely require an accident or a disaster for Mercedes to throw the win away. The bigger question is which one of Bottas or Hamilton finishes first. Bottas has the early advantage.

"Of course mentally when you are starting from pole you can only aim to win,” the Finn said. “The pace is there. First job is to get off the line, and the mentality is to try to win it."

Hamilton, who has won six of the last seven races at this circuit, and seven in total, will be doing his best to stop him on this 70th anniversary race. “He did a better job and it was down to me not doing a good enough job,” was the champion’s verdict. “It was relatively close so it is not the end of the world.”

02:36 PM

Okay, that's it from me today

Would be a VERY interesting race if Bottas and Hamilton took each other out. Why not, eh? Bottas has that contract signed for next year and needs to get his elbows out of he is to win the championship this year.

I'll be back tomorrow from around 12.45pm for all the build-up to the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix.

02:29 PM

Lando Norris reacts to 10th

A bit of a tough one. Still, the McLaren has good race pace and plenty of points up for grabs.

I didn't think there was a lot more in the car. A lot of the times we've done exceptionally well and better than we should have done. I don't think we're shocked with P10. We knew it was going to be difficult. I said before the weekend it would have been difficult to get into Q3.

02:22 PM

Nice moment from Ricciardo and Verstappen

To congratulate Hulkenberg on his mega performance.

02:20 PM

How did I do with my predictions?

Here's what I thought would be the order before the session started. I think I did okay...

  1. BOT
  2. HAM
  3. VER - Out by one
  4. RIC - Out by one
  5. HUL - Out by two
  6. LEC - Out by two
  7. GAS
  8. STR - Out by two
  9. ALB
  10. NOR

A clean sweep on the first and fifth rows!

02:13 PM

Decent day for George Russell

Into Q2 again but 15th probably the maximum possible from the car today.

02:10 PM

Hulkenberg reacts to his best qualifying in.... how long? A long time.

Crazy last week. This weekend I felt much better in the car, much better prepared. Q3 was just head down, full beans, whatever I had. A bit surprised to stand here but a big smile on my face. That's definitely going to hurt tomorrow, not having last week's experience [in the race]. We'll do what we can and I'll try to learn fast.

It's only Saturday but it's definitely one of the nice little highlights. It's no time to cheer yet because tomorrow is the big day.

02:08 PM

Hamilton has a short and sweet interview...

I wasn't that great. For me, it wasn't a perfect last lap. Valtteri deserves the pole. I don't think many people will be managing with the softer. It's highly unlikely that many people will do a one stop tomorrow.

02:06 PM

Bottas reacts to his second pole of the season — he needed it

It feels good. I just love qualifying. It was nice to get everything out of myself and out of the car. Set-up wise we made good steps from last week. Really pleased with that and again, proud to drive this amazing car. It's so quick.

02:05 PM

Albon had a good first run in Q3

But again he ends up half a second down in Verstappen. The story of his time at Red Bull, unfortunately. Very little improvement in qualifying when it really matters.

The Hulkenberg podium is on. I found it a bit baffling how he was shunted off the grid at the end of last year. How would he be doing in the other Red Bull?

02:03 PM

Q3 ends

Classification and times

  1. BOT 1.25.154
  2. HAM +0.063
  3. HUL +0.928
  4. VER +1.022
  5. RIC +1.143
  6. STR +1.274
  7. GAS +1.380
  8. LEC +1.460
  9. ALB +1.515
  10. NOR +1.624

02:02 PM

HULKENBERG UP INTO P3!

WOW! Stroll sixth... Ricciardo currently fifth...

What can Verstappen do?! Can he beat Hulkenberg?! No he can't! But he makes it a second row start for Red Bull.

Where is Albon? Ninth. Only ninth...

Gasly seventh... Stroll sixth. Some superb performances there.

02:01 PM

VALTTERI BOTTAS TAKES POLE POSITION FOR THE 2020 70TH ANNIVERSARY GRAND PRIX

Yes he can! By 0.063! Mighty lap from the Finn. What a mighty lap that was.

02:01 PM

Q3 - Bottas improves his middle sector!

He's 0.042s up on where he needs to be at the moment!
Hamilton improves by 0.067. Can Bottas beat him?!

02:00 PM

Q3 - Bottas improves his first sector

Hamilton doesn't. These medium tyres will hang on towards the end of the lap, which is where it will be won and lost. Nothing between them so far...

01:59 PM

Q3 - Mercedes on the mediums for this final run

Which I was not expecting. Ricciardo staying on them as well. As I said, there does not seem to be a great deal of difference between the two over one fast lap here.

01:58 PM

Q3 - Final runs underway

A whole bunch of out laps at the moment. Just 0.116s separates Hamilton from Bottas. Around what the gap was last year. Will that change on their second runs here?

01:57 PM

Q3 - What a lap by Ricciardo

On the mediums! That is better from Albon. Within three tenths of Verstappen. That's where he needs to be.

Renault driver Daniel Ricciardo of Australia steers his car during qualifying for the 70th Anniversary Formula One Grand Prix at the Silverstone circuit, Silverstone, England, Saturday, Aug. 8, 2020 - AP/ Will Oliver

01:56 PM

Q3 - Order and times after the first runs

  1. HAM 1.25.884 Soft tyre
  2. BOT +0.116 Soft
  3. RIC +1.013 Medium
  4. HUL +1.132 Soft
  5. VER +1.148 Medium
  6. ALB +1.489 Medium
  7. LEC +1.525 Soft
  8. STR +1.612 Soft
  9. GAS +1.872 Soft
  10. NOR +1.966 Soft

01:54 PM

Q3 - Bottas can't beat Hamilton's first time

He's a tenth behind! Good recovery...

Hulkenberg P4, Verstappen fifth, Albon sixth, Leclerc seventh...

Hulkenberg again runs wide in the middle of the lap and loses a tenth or so. A bit of time left in that Racing Point. He's got the pace over Stroll here, big time!

01:53 PM

Q3 - Hamilton the quickest man in S1

Hamilton two tenths up in sector one on Bottas alone!

Norris will be first but not for very long. Hamilton's second sector is the quickest of all, but beaten by Bottas!

Hamilton goes quickest, Ricciardo second so far...

What can Bottas do?

01:51 PM

Q3 - Some classic backing up going on here...

Norris will be the first man to set a timed lap. No yellow flags in this qualifying so far, which is refreshing. Ricciardo, Albon and Verstappen on medium tyres... everyone else on the softs.

01:50 PM

Q3 begins!

12 minutes to go.

Right here's my predicted order:

  1. BOT
  2. HAM
  3. VER
  4. RIC
  5. HUL
  6. LEC
  7. GAS
  8. STR
  9. ALB
  10. NOR

01:48 PM

So, a Mercedes front row

But in what order? And who knows what will happen for the rest of them? Would be great to see Hulkenberg up there. And Gasly. Think it'll be Verstappen in third. Wouldn't put it past Ricciardo to get up on the second row as well.

01:44 PM

That was a fine lap from Hulkenberg

After screwing up his first run. Likewise from Gasly, actually.

Interestingly, Verstappen gets through on the hard tyre so will start on them tomorrow. The only man in the top 10 to do so.

01:43 PM

Q2 - Classification

  1. BOT
  2. HUL
  3. HAM
  4. GAS
  5. RIC
  6. ALB
  7. STR
  8. LEC
  9. VER
  10. NOR
    OUT:
  11. OCO
  12. VET
  13. SAI
  14. GRO
  15. RUS

01:42 PM

Q2 - Vettel CANNOT get through!

He's only P12! Never had it hooked up all weekend. Or last weekend. Team-mate Leclerc through.

01:41 PM

Q2 - Norris goes P7

But he's in danger there. Hulkenberg goes second! Gasly P4! Ocon cannot get through! Only P11 for the Frenchman.

Sainz can't get through. Gasly goes fourth! Albon improves to fourth pushing Norris down to P10...

Both Mercedes back off.

Can Vettel get through?

01:40 PM

Q2 - Final runs underway

It'll be a frantic end here.

Norris doesn't improve on his sector one time. Not great. Hulkenberg doesn't improve on his time, either. Come on Nico! Gasly does improve.

Hamilton sets the quickest S1 time. Hulkenberg has a much better second sector and he's 0.8s up on where he needs to be...

01:39 PM

Q2 - Order so far

  1. BOT
  2. HAM
  3. RIC
  4. LEC
  5. VER
  6. STR
  7. ALB
  8. NOR
  9. OCO
  10. GAS
    DROP ZONE:
  11. VET
  12. RUS
  13. SAI
  14. HUL
  15. GRO

Vettel out on the soft tyres... this is going to have to be the lap of Vettel's season. Gasly can go much quicker, as can Hulkenberg and possibly Sainz. Albon looking a bit more comfortable in this session.

01:38 PM

Q2 - What can Russell do?

He's cranking it up for his hot lap now. Gasly lost a lot of time running wide at the same place Hulkenberg did, too.

Russell's first sector is about two tenths off Bottas's quickest time. He's about a tenth down on where he needs to be after two sectors... and just 0.078s off P10! He's in 12th then. Decent go, George.

01:34 PM

Q2 - Leclerc fastest in sector one

Vettel looking tidy but ultimately slow. He's only P10 and will be knocked down when Leclerc sets his time. The Monaco man moves fourth, six tenths of a second quicker than his team-mate. Ouch.

Russell takes advantage of a clean track to go and set his lap.

01:33 PM

Q2 - Top 10 so far

  1. BOT
  2. HAM
  3. RIC
  4. VER
  5. STR
  6. ALB
  7. NOR
  8. OCO
  9. GAS
  10. SAI

01:33 PM

Q2 - Ferraris out

Would be a surprise for Vettel to get through here. The other Racing Point of Stroll went P5, by the way.

01:32 PM

Q2 - Ricciardo into P3

Verstappen goes P4 on the hard tyre. He's quicker than Albon on the mediums... by two tenths. Ouch. What can Hulkenberg do? He was the quickest man in sector one but probably took too much out of the tyres and can only go P11. Oh, he ran very wide at Chapel and ruined his lap. Costing him at least a second I reckon. If not more. There is pace in that car...

01:31 PM

Q2 - Hamilton on a hot lap

As Ocon goes fastest first up, 1.5s ahead of Grosjean.

Bottas the quicker of the two Mercedes in the first two sectors... but Hamilton has been the king of the final sector the last week or so.

Hamilton posts a 1.26.266... Bottas ends up 0.481s quicker in the end. Hamilton was quicker in the final sector there but Bottas bossed that lap.

01:29 PM

Q2 - Verstappen on the hard compound tyre

Which is... interesting. He's getting quite fighty with the McLaren of Lando Norris out there for position. Well, relatively. He lets him through around the outside of Luffield in the end. Verstappen the only driver on the hards.

01:27 PM

Q2 begins

15 minutes to go. This will be an interesting session. Last time around Lance Stroll and Pierre Gasly posted exactly the same lap times in this session but Stroll set his first so went through. We are looking at hundredths of a second being the difference between going out and going through.

01:23 PM

Ocon blocking Russell

Ocon was trying to get past the other car but they were both on out laps. Unfortunate for Russell, but he got through anyway. As did Ocon. I still think it'll be a penalty, though.

01:22 PM

Q1 - Drivers through

  1. BOT
  2. HAM
  3. ALB
  4. VER
  5. GAS
  6. STR
  7. NOR
  8. OCO
  9. HUL
  10. LEC
  11. RIC
  12. SAI
  13. GRO
  14. VET
  15. RUS
  16. KVY

Well done to Albon for stringing it together at the end and going quicker than Verstappen — who did not do a second run, however.

01:21 PM

Q1 - Drivers out

Kvyat, Magnussen, Latifi, Gioivinazzi, Raikkonen

01:21 PM

Q1 ends

Stroll puts in a decent lap to go P6. Kvyat in danger now as his lap was deleted and he's in P15 now... Ocon knocks him out! Russell is through!

Bottas pops up with the quickest time of the session at the end. 0.080s quicker than Hamilton. Kvyat ran wide at Stowe and said he thinks something on the floor broke. Contrast with team-mate Gasly who finished that session fifth!

01:19 PM

Q1 - Latifi can't make it through

Norris on a decent lap, going P4. Sainz P8. Not as quick.

Gasly goes P4, he has it hooked up! Albon goes P3! That's a good lap. Vettel goes P11 and he should be okay! Magnussen cannot get out... but Grosjean can!

01:19 PM

Q1 - Russell sets his fastest S1 time

Looks nice and tidy in the opening part of the lap. 296km/h through Copse. He's probably going into the top 10 with this time. Will that be enough?

A nice end to the lap sees him post a 1.27.757 and he goes eighth! Nice work.

01:17 PM

Q1 - Final runs under way

Two minutes to go.

Can Russell get through? I think he can. Can he even stay ahead of Albon?

01:16 PM

Q1 - Ricciardo popped up into P6 with his late first run

Six tenths off Hamilton. He has looked decent here the last two weeks.

01:15 PM

Q1 - 5 mins to go

Albon in the drop zone. Vettel just above it. Both drivers really, really struggling again this weekend. Ocon tells his race engineer that he thinks they will get a penalty for that incident. Perhaps a lack of communication there. I think Albon and Vettel are vulnerable here.

01:14 PM

Q1 - Bit of an untidy lap from Stroll

Only in P14. Vettel not much better, P13.

Hamilton then goes into the 1.26s to go quickest, Bottas was marginally slower.

Incident involving Ocon and Russell is under investigation. Ocon blocking at the start of the lap and there was nearly a collision. There was another car on the track that Ocon was trying to make his way around, but neither of those were on their hot laps. And the Frenchman was on the racing line. That should be a certain 3-place grid drop for him.

01:11 PM

Q1 - Classification so far

  1. VER
  2. BOT
  3. HAM
  4. HUL
  5. GAS
  6. LEC
  7. KVY

01:11 PM

Q1 - Max Verstappen goes quickest

With a 1.27.154. That's a sharp time. Team-mate Albon, meanwhile, runs very wide over the kerbs in the middle of the lap and is miiiiles behind. He's in P13 1.32s off Verstappen's quickest time... more struggles.

01:09 PM

Q1 - Bottas the quickest man

Hamilton the first Mercedes to set a time but Bottas goes 0.056s quicker. Leclerc sets a decent time which leaves him up towards the front. Nico Hulkenberg sets a time that's just a tenth slower than Bottas. Nice.

01:08 PM

Q1 - Giovinazzi in the Alfa on a hot lap

How hot is it? Not very. He's fifth and slowest of anyone to set a time so far. He's also pipped by Raikkonen by a tenth.

Norris goes second, Vettel third. Not a great time by Vettel, a few tenths off Norris's time. All on the softs.

01:06 PM

Q1 - Russell goes second

Quicker than both Haas cars, marginally over Grosjean. Decent time from him on the mediums. Hamilton on Bottas both on track now.

01:05 PM

Q1 - Magnussen the first man to set a time

But the second man to do so is his team-mate Grosjean, who is the quicker of the two. Hulkenberg about to beat them both on the soft tyres. By how much? A second at least I reckon. Yep, 1.177... to be precise.

01:02 PM

Q1 - 16 minutes to go

Hulkenberg out on the softs, both Haas cars and Russell on the mediums. The softs give up so much in the final sector that there is not a great difference over one qualifying lap between them and the mediums. The out laps will be pretty slow today.

01:00 PM

Q1 begins!

18 minutes to go. Who is going out?

12:58 PM

It's a warm one...

12:55 PM

Nigel Mansell is 67 today

Happy birthday to him.

Earlier in the year I took an in-depth look at his championship-winning Williams FW14B and what made it so successful. What a car that was.

12:52 PM

Eight minutes until qualifying starts

In other contract-related news this weekend, Valtteri Bottas has signed a new contract to keep him at Mercedes next year. Not really a great surprise. Would love to see Verstappen/Norris/Ricciardo etc. in that car but why change a winning formula? Bottas is a solid number two driver who has improved since his poor year in 2018. No need for any change.

He's no Rosberg. But then again, that is exactly what Mercedes want.

12:30 PM

Will tyres be an issue again this weekend?

Well, yes, but not in the way they were at the British Grand Prix. The failures late on the race there was brought about by an unusual set of circumstances which led to the teams running for 40-odd laps on the hard compound tyres when, usually, they might run for a little less time.

The interesting thing will be what tyres teams choose in qualifying, in particular whether they will want to start the race on the soft, medium or hard compound of tyre. The race will likely be a two-stopper as standard, so we could see some variation depending on how high the tyre degradation is tomorrow. It is likely to be a scorcher tomorrow, so probably high.

A bit more on the Racing Point row from Tom Cary at Silverstone

A weekend of nostalgia and celebration, looking back on 70 years of Formula One, kicked off with one of the sport’s most ancient traditions; a good old-fashioned row about the legality of one of the cars.

Racing Point were on Friday fined €400,000 (£361,000) and docked 15 constructors’ championship points, after rivals Renault won a protest against their car’s brake ducts.

The decision, which was announced on Friday morning, overshadowed practice ahead of this weekend’s 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, a nod to the first F1 world championship race, which was held at Silverstone in May 1950.

11:58 AM

Good afternoon F1 fans

And welcome to our coverage for qualifying for the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix at Silverstone. It's the second week in a row we're racing around this wonderful Northamptonshire circuit. Last time out at the British Grand Prix we had a profoundly dull 49 laps before the race burst into fashion with three tyre failures, most dramatically for Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton at the front. Hamilton clung on to the victory with three wheels on his wagon but poor old Bottas finished outside of the points and now faces a 30-point deficit to the Briton in the championship.

What can we expect from this weekend? More Mercedes dominance, to be brutally honest. Not that it would have been a surprise, given all we saw last weekend but their performances in the three practice session so far indicates that they will be some way ahead of the field again. I'd say let's hope for Bottas to pip Hamilton to pole position but he's so far behind in the championship now that Hamilton could finish second to him in the next six rounds and still lead the championship.

It looks pretty tight behind them, though, with Red Bull, McLaren, Racing Point, Renault, Ferrari and perhaps even AlphaTauri in the mix for some reasonable points at Silverstone.  Nico Hulkenberg — subbing in for Sergio Perez at Racing Point for a second weekend — has had a decent weekend so far, finishing P4 in final practice and being pretty much on the pace of his team-mate Lance Stroll in every session. He did not manage to even start his "comeback" Grand Prix last week, so fingers crossed that he can actually take the grid this time.

It will be interesting to see how the row over Racing Point's current car plays out, with several teams now protesting the severity of the punishment they received yesterday over their rear brake ducts. In total they were fine 400,000 euro and docked 15 constructor points. It is not over.
