It might be sizzling hot outside, but there's a chill in the air in EastEnders at the moment, with countless dark mysteries that have got us hooked.

There is no denying that the show has gathered momentum over the last few weeks as it heads towards an unmissable summer. Here are just some of mysteries that we are genuinely intrigued by right now:

1. What is going on with Max?

Yes, we admit that we are totally baffled by this one. Max Branning set the wheels of his intricate revenge plan into motion when he returned to Walford last Christmas, but six months on and we still don't have a scooby.

We know he's peeved at being framed for Lucy's murder, we know he has teamed up with the chairman of mysterious property company Weyland & Co, and we know that not even his family are immune from his callous revenge plan. But other than that, we're lost.

This plot is a bit like a marathon for the mind; just when you think you're making progress, you hit another wall. We've already given you a list of our burning questions, but to be honest, we could go on forever.

Why is he targeting his nearest and dearest and not the Beales who framed him? What does he have against the Carters? Who is the man he visited in prison? And what exactly is his end game?Jake Wood reckons Max's story could go on for years, but let's just hope we get some answers before then…

2. Are Josh and the Chairman related?

We initially wondered if Fi and Weyland's chairman could be connected, but a new twist has thrown everything up in the air. As a sub plot to the ongoing Max drama, there are also some very big questions regarding Lauren Branning's enigmatic boss Josh Hemmings and that Chairman. And interestingly, last night's scenes fans speculating whether there could be more than just a work connection between the two.

During a heart-to-heart with Lauren, Josh dropped some intriguing hints about his background – and in particular, his father, telling her that he only started dating fiancée Imogen because the two families were so close. Admitting that he faced pressure from his family to commit to Imogen, he said: "My dad's the kind of man you want to please..."

Let's not forget that Simon Williams' character is only ever credited as "The Chairman", with no reference to his actual name. But given that the writers have gone to the trouble of giving both Josh and Fi a name, surely there has to be a reason for this?

3. What is Abi capable of?

We're not going to lie, we love deliciously dark Abi. Lauren and Steven's story has gathered huge momentum over the last few days thanks to Abi and her jealousy, and we'd be lying if we said we weren't intrigued by what she's going to do next.

Utterly fed up with living in her sister's shadow, Abi set out to destroy the perfect illusion Steven has of his girlfriend – spitefully revealing that Lauren had an abortion behind his back. Abi then tried to intervene further when Steven subsequently to forgive Lauren for her betrayal, and she's definitely one to watch over the coming episodes. But what exactly is Abi's game? And more importantly, what is she capable of?

We know she's jealous of Lauren, but her actions go way beyond your average sibling rivalry. Does she fancy Steven? Is she secretly plotting with Max? Or does her vendetta for her sister just run deeper than we could have ever imagined? She's certainly cut from her dad's cloth, but we're on the edge of our seats with this one. And with Steven's unhinged side thrown into the mix as well, this plot has us hooked at the moment.

4. Who is Nosebleed Man?

At a first glance, it looked like EastEnders was lining up some long-awaited happiness for Michelle. A new romance with a man she met on the tube – what could possibly go wrong? Well, lots of things as happens. Tom the Nosebleed Man seemed like a decent enough guy, until we saw him standing outside Michelle's house at that very moment, looking through various photos that he'd secretly taken of her. That's right, weirdo alert!

Little else is known about Nosebleed Man's intentions right now, but we are naturally worried about poor Chelle, given that she's about to get even closer to him. Back on the shelf after her unscrupulous antics with Preston, Michelle is determined that this new chapter in her life is going to be a positive one. But sadly, something tells us this isn't going happen.

So who is Nosebleed Man? Why is he stalking Michelle? And is she in danger? One thing is for sure, he's definitely not just the normal man with the ill-timed nosebleeds she met by chance on the Tube. To be honest, we're even doubting that nosebleed full stop.

5. Does Fi have a secret?

We are slowly getting to know more about no-nonsense Fi Browning, who likes to rock up at The Vic at the most inconvenient time possible. We know she's ruthless (she sacked Tracey after all), but we reckon she comes armed with more than just new ideas for The Vic.

Sent by the freeholders after Shirley signed most of the Carters' rights away, it all seems relatively straightforward where Fi is concerned so far. But given the businesswoman is connected to the mysterious goings on at Weyland & Co, it's unlikely to stay like that.

Show boss Sean O'Connor has already suggested that all may not be as it seems with Fi, and with Lee Ryan's character Woody on his way back as well, things are definitely about to get exciting. Is Fi hiding a big secret? Our guess is yes.

6. What are the Murrays hiding?

We are quickly warming to the new Murray pair, but much like Fi, it's pretty clear that there is much more going on here. Pensioners Ted and Joyce, played by TV legends Christopher Timothy and Maggie Steed, initially seemed like a harmless elderly couple, who were just a bit miffed about being rehoused from the tower block they'd lived in for 40 years.

But as always with EastEnders newbies, it didn't take viewers long to cotton on to early signs of a dark secret as we later learned that they had a gun hidden away in their belongings. Come on, Walford might not the the safest of places, but this seems extreme! Are the Murrays dangerous? Or are they running away from someone? Maybe the Taylors should be worried given their previously referenced history...

7. What next for Mick and Linda?

It might not be a mystery of the Max Branning's kind, but we're still intrigued by what the future holds for Mick and Linda Carter after everything that's happened. The childhood sweethearts have always believed they were soulmates. But their relationship has come under immense strain over the last few months, and to be honest, we're wondering how they can come back from it.

Linda devastated her husband by agreeing to sell the pub's freehold behind his back, but it was Mick who committed the ultimate betrayal when he kissed his daughter-in-law Whitney. With Linda returning next week, the big question now is: just how much is Mick going to tell her? And can she forgive him? Let's not forget that Mick did tell Whitney he had feelings for her, and Shirley is also aware of what went on between them. We've been promised a three-hander episode featuring this story's main players, so let's hope that will answer our questions...

8. The big summer plot

This one stands apart from the others on this list as we don't actually know what it is. But doesn't that just add to the intrigue?

If fans thought EastEnders was shutting up shop for the summer, then think again, as recent reports suggest that there is one particularly big story planned that will get everyone talking. Several of the show's stars have been hyping up the exciting plot recently, suggesting that viewers are in for a rollercoaster of a ride.

Bonnie Langford, who plays Carmel Kazemi, revealed: "I am excited. There is a big summer storyline coming up, of course, but I think it's one of those storylines that isn't something quick that just happens as an event. It's a waterfall effect, I think. Once the rollercoaster begins, it will be the place to watch, really."

Tilly Keeper, who plays Louise Mitchell, added: "It's a very big storyline between all of us. We can't say too much, but expect big drama."

Intrigued? Us too. But we reckon it's going to be worth the wait.
