News of Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson's breakup is spreading across the internet like wildfire, but with no comment from neither Ariana nor Pete, we're still struggling to figure out what exactly went wrong. Looking back on their relationship, however, there were definitely signs that things weren't going great for the couple for a few weeks now. To help make sense of this upsetting news, here are all of the signs that predicted the end of Ari and Pete's engagement:

1. They got engaged after three weeks

Love is a crazy thing. It doesn't care about arbitrary rules like how long you have to date before getting engaged. But Ariana and Pete throwing a ring on it just three weeks after they began dating did seem a little quick.

The fast engagement was also emphasized by the fact that both Ari and Pete exited their previous long-term relationships just weeks before the two got together. Ariana and Mac Miller reportedly ended things in May, while Pete and his ex, Cazzie David, also broke up in the spring. By early July, Pete and Ariana were engaged. It's possible that this quick turnaround left both Ariana and Pete with a lot of unresolved issues from their previous relationships, issues that may have manifested themselves in their own engagement.

2. Mac Miller's Death.

Just a few months after Ariana and Mac broke up, the rapper died of an apparent overdose. Of course, this really upset Ariana who knew about Mac's struggle with substance abuse. While she didn't blame herself for his death, according to TMZ, the news caused Ari to really think about her relationship with Pete. She realized she wasn't fully invested in Pete and that the two had gotten engaged way too fast. It's possible that Mac's death is when the cracks really started to form between Ari and Pete.

3. Pete Covered up his Ariana Tattoo

Immediately after they started dating, Pete started getting tattoos in honor of his new bae, Ariana. He got "AG" on his thumb, "Grande" on his side, "mille tendresse" on the back of his neck to match a tattoo Ariana already had, and the Dangerous Woman bunny mask on his neck.

Pete wasn't alone in getting couple tattoos, however. Ari also joined in on the trend, getting "Pete" tattooed on her ring finger, right above her massive engagement ring.

Things got weird, however, when it appeared that Pete had covered up the Dangerous Woman tattoo on his neck, replacing it with a black heart. According to Page Six, the heart apparently matches a tattoo that Ari also has, though we've never gotten a glimpse of her version of the tattoo.. In addition to the heart, Pete added a small "A" on his neck, most likely for Ariana.

While these two new tats are apparently also in honor of Ariana, it's weird that he covered up the original bunny mask, a symbol so closely related to the singer.

4. Ariana dropped out of performing on Saturday Night Live

While Kanye West caused a stir as the musical guest on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live a few weeks back, Ariana Grande was actually the show's first choice.

"We had Ariana drop out for emotional reasons two days ago,” SNL Producer Lorne Michaels told People before the season premiere. "And then Kanye stepped up, so he’ll be there."

Of course, Ariana dropping out of SNL could be because of Mac Miller's death, which had occurred only a few weeks before her set appearance, but it's also interesting to note Pete's role in the situation, as a cast member on the sketch comedy show.

5. Ariana recently canceled a charity performance

Ariana has been dropping out of a lot of performances recently. Just two days ago, a day before the breakup went public, the singer canceled a performance at a cancer benefit hosted by her manager, Scooter Braun, according to People.

"Someone that I am very close to could not be here today because of things that she is going through," Scooter said about Ariana at the F-k Cancer's Barbara Berlanti Heroes Gala in L.A. on Saturday. "She couldn’t be here today, and while I was frustrated, being a manager, my wife, being who she always is, said to me, 'She needs this time.'"

Again, Ariana may have canceled the performance because she is still getting over Mac's death, but with the timing so close to the announcement of the couple's split, it seems extremely possible that Ari stayed home on Saturday to try to work things out with Pete.

6. Ariana's emotional tweets

Just a few weeks ago, Ariana took to Twitter, posting multiple tweets that made fans concerned about her mental health. At the time, it was assumed that Ari was simply dealing with the death of her ex, Mac, but now it seems possible that the tweets had to do with her relationship with Pete.

7. Pete's made jokes about their relationship on SNL

On the season premiere of SNL, Pete Davidson was in the spotlight during the Weekend Update, when host Colin Jost asked the comedian about his summer and engagement to Ariana Grande.

He made many jokes about the relationship, like the necessity for the two to sign a prenup: "God forbid we split up and then she takes half my sneakers," as well as what he brings to the relationship: "I think it’s dope. I live at her place. She pays 60 grand for rent and all I have to do is stock the fridge."

Fans got upset, however, when Pete made a joke regarding his plan to make sure Ariana doesn't break up with him. "Last night I switched her birth control with Tic Tacs," he said. "I believe in us and all, but I just want to make sure that she can’t go anywhere."

Many were pretty upset about this joke, taking to Twitter to voice their displeasure.

Ariana never made a comment about the joke, but it's possible that she too was offended by it, and it possibly casued some tension in the relationship.

8. The timing was bad

According to Entertainment Tonight, Ariana is the one who ended her engagement with Pete, citing bad timing as the reason.

“Ariana made the final decision," as source told ET. Of course, Pete is extremely upset about the decision. "Pete is incredibly heartbroken. Pete is still is so in love with her. He wanted his whole world to revolve around her but she was emotionally unavailable. He realizes she was at her limit with pressure from everyone and everything around her."

Despite how heartbroken he is, it seems that Pete also agrees that breaking up is the right decision. "Their family and friends stand behind their decision entirely and Ariana’s team feels this will give her time to heal," says the source.

The split came due to bad timing, probably having to do with Mac's death, among other things. "They got engaged because they both felt this instant connection and even now after their split they are still deeply in love," the source continued. "But their timing has truly affected their plans and made it impossible for them to make it work at the moment."
