You can say one thing for Hollyoaks – there's hardly ever a dull moment, and 2017 is showing all the signs of being another thrilling year for the residents of Chester.
But who's going to be taking centre stage during all the fast and furious plots? Well, our prediction is that this year will mainly be about well-established characters having a resurgence, with one or two newer additions sharing the spotlight.
Want to know which nine characters have made it onto our watch list? Here you go...
1. Nancy Osborne
Nance is such a key Hollyoaks character, and after a sad start to 2017 when she was diagnosed with MS, we hope the rest of the year will be looking up for Mrs O. The arrival of her one-time boyfriend Kyle just gives Nancy something else to do that doesn't revolve around Darren and/or Charlie. Okay, so there's not going to be a secret affair, unless Nancy decides to try and turn Kyle (seems unlikely), but there's loads of potential for an interesting friendship to develop.
Also there's the opportunity to explore the reality of Nancy's experience living with MS, and to watch Jessica Fox doing what she does best – delivering cracking performances. In a weird way, we think it might give Nancy a whole new lease of life.
2. DS Gavin Armstrong
How could we not be interested in a bent copper who's also a scary stalker and might be a murderer? It's exciting that we still don't really know too much about Gavin's background, meaning there's loads of potential here for character development and finding out what other skeletons the preying policeman has got lurking in his closet.
We think it shouldn't just be Leela who's watching her back when it comes to this smooth criminal...
3. Sienna Blake
She's preggers with Warren Fox's twins, so there's no way we aren't going to have lots more on-screen action from this mumma-to-be. We're already trying to imagine how bonkers 'Oaks are going to make the birth scenes.
And then of course there's Sienna and Warren's complicated relationship, which is going to be seriously put to the test over the next few weeks, with Sienna making some risky decisions regarding her baby daddy.
Miss B may think she's very experienced when it comes to dealing with bad men, but dangerous Foxy is an entirely different ball game. Might Sienna end up going the same way as poor Louise?
4. Darcy Wilde
We're totally team Maxine, but that doesn't mean Darcy's going to do one. Far from it. The meddling minx is going to be a key player in 2017 as the fight for Adam's affections heats up. Darce has made it pretty damn clear that she wants her former fiancé, and she's going to use every trick in the book to get her claws back into the dishy Donovan, including using their son Toby as bait.
We're not sure Adam is going to need much persuading to do the dirty on Maxine, but we bet if he does, he's going to live to regret letting Darcy back into his life. Yep, there's definitely more to this bad blonde than meets the eye.
5 & 6. Joel Dexter & Cleo McQueen
We've been teased with the possibility of a Joel and Cleo romance despite the fact that he's a trainee priest, so it really better happen now. We can totally see why Cleo is crushing on Warren's sexy son (come on, who doesn't like a bit of rough?), and they look friggin' awesome together, but might the young McQueen be getting in over her head by getting mixed up with him?
What might make the relationship even more intriguing is that Joel's a secret killer, and has ruthlessly framed Cleo's cousin Bart for Katy's death. This storyline is a ticking time bomb – you just know it's going to explode very soon. Will Joel end up dragging Cleo to the dark side with him?
7. Marnie Nightingale
Never underestimate the Nightingale! Currently on a mission to drive Mac mad after discovering that he was freaking foxy Lisa behind her back and pushed Nathan to his death (no biggie, eh?), Marnie's not a woman to be messed with. There don't seem to be any limits to what she's capable of either.
If Mac manages to make it to the end of the year with all his vital organs still intact, it will be a miracle. The only one thing that would make Marnie's wrath even more entertaining is if Tabby popped back from America to help her bring Mac down.
8. Ste Hay
With Ste languishing behind bars after confessing to killing Amy, the fans have whipped themselves up in a frenzy over the possibility of a prison reunion with his one true love... Mr Brendan Brady. While the chances of that are slim (although it would make our year), what seems even more unlikely is that Ste murdered the mother of his kids.
This drama has put Mr Hay centre stage once again, and we're only at the beginning of this big whodunit. Ste may be the prime suspect, but who's betting the real murderer is still on the loose thinking they've got away with it? How long will it be before Ste's memory returns, and what will he remember of that fateful night? Is it possible he knows who ended Amy's life, and will he help bring them to justice?
