87 million Nigerians eligible to choose their next leader in tense presidential election

Officials begin to count votes in Lago as polls close in the Nigerian capital.

In Africa's most densely populated country with a total of 220 million people, 87 million were eligible to vote for their next president.

The elections took place under tight security measures. Armed militias are active in some parts of the country, including the jihadist Boko Haram.

Nigeria's borders were closed on election day and, with a few exceptions, cars were not allowed to drive either.
