Hollyoaks spoilers follow.
Nearly ten months on from Hollyoaks' flashforward special, we still can't get enough of the tantalising mysteries that the soap teased us with in December 2019.
The body bag, the mystery wedding, the new relationship and the intriguing new friendship have all sparked plenty of gossip over the course of 2020, and in just over two months, we'll finally know everything.
Hollyoaks will catch up with the flashforward storylines when its timeline reaches December 31, 2020 – but we reckon it's high time for another deep dive into some of those mysteries.
Are we getting closer to any of the answers? Let's look at the evidence.
1. Who's dead?
No surprises here – we're still no further forward when it comes to figuring out whose days are numbered. December's flashforward episode confirmed upcoming tragedy for the village, as a crime scene and body bag were seen outside The Hutch.
A devastated John Paul was spotted sobbing nearby, while Darren also looked distraught as a knife was put into a police evidence bag in the kitchen at the restaurant.
We've interviewed the Hollyoaks cast over the course of the year and nobody has let much slip, aside from James Sutton – who plays John Paul – teasing that he knows the identity of the unlucky victim. Ellis Hollins – aka Tom Cunningham – also confirmed that it's not him.
Mitchell Drinkwell-Deveraux (Imran Adams) is the only character currently known to be leaving, but since he doesn't interact much with John Paul and isn't involved in the County Lines drug plot, it'd be a curveball if the New Year death was him.
Since the flashforward aired, however, we have seen the show introduce some new characters, such as John Paul's boyfriend PC Kiss. Could the hunky detective have been introduced in 2020 with the intention of a tragically short stay?
2. What has Charlie done?
It was a big shock to see Charlie Dean embroiled in criminal activity when the flashforward first aired last year, but the events of 2020 have explained all.
The scenes set at the end of this year showed the police finding drugs in Charlie's game controller, prompting Nancy to shout upstairs: "What have you done?"
Charlie was chosen by Jordan Price as a drugs helper this year and became particularly impressionable after the tragic death of Kyle Kelly.
Jordan has since been brought to justice for his dealing, but this week's episodes have hinted that he could return due to a mistake that PC Kiss made when arresting him.
Could Jordan be responsible for preying on Charlie again if he returns to his old stomping ground? And is Charlie just guilty of storing and dealing drugs, or could he also have something to do with the death outside The Hutch?
3. Is Luke dead at the end of 2020?
Hollyoaks' flashforward sparked speculation that Luke Morgan may not be around by the end of this year. Luke's son Ollie was seen in a bad state in a toilet cubicle, holding a supply of drugs and saying: "I just miss him so much".
While Luke has a terminal condition, his symptoms are developing slowly and it now seems more unlikely that he'll be leaving the show in the immediate future. There has been no news about Gary Lucy finishing filming, unless the Hollyoaks bosses are keeping their cards close to their chests.
Our guess, though, is that Ollie will be referring to how much he misses his baby son Thierry. Recent episodes showed that Ollie is still struggling after he and Brooke put the little one up for adoption.
4. When will Ollie be back?
Speaking of Ollie, we can't help thinking that Hollyoaks' plans for the flashforward storylines may have gone slightly awry along the way. In a Digital Spy exclusive, the show recently announced that Ollie has been recast after original actor Aedan Duckworth left the show during lockdown.
The upcoming switch means that Ollie had to be temporarily written out, hence the shoehorned-in scenes recently showing that he'd gone to stay with his mum.
Hollyoaks has not provided a reason for Aedan's exit, nor any details on when the character of Ollie will be back on screen with a new face. However, it seems likely that he'll be back sometime before New Year's Eve in order to fit the timeline of the flashforward.
5. Who's getting married?
The flashforward episode also saw various characters dressed for a wedding. Tom Cunningham and Romeo Nightingale were tipped as the most likely grooms, after they were both seen outside The Dog in similar suits.
It's possible that Hollyoaks is ready to solve this mystery, as next week's 25th anniversary episodes see Yazz Maalik propose to Tom. This could potentially make them the New Year happy couple – or simply be a huge Hollyoaks red herring.
Romeo is also currently involved in a romantic storyline, as he has fallen head-over-heels for newcomer Cher Winter. The flashforward hinted that the past will stay on his mind, though, as he told Tom: "I still love her – what am I supposed to do?"
Could another option see Romeo prepare to marry Cher, only to be haunted by his grief for his late girlfriend Lily on the day?
6. What has brought Marnie and Misbah so close?
Marnie and Misbah have never been the best of friends, so Hollyoaks fans were surprised to see them looking so close in the flashforward.
Never one to do things by halves, Marnie dramatically gushed about Misbah being "the greatest friend" she'd ever had, adding: "I don't know how I would have got through this year without you."
The mystery of Marnie and Misbah's friendship is one that has been solved, as recent episodes saw Misbah help to keep Marnie calm when her beloved patisserie was targeted by thieves.
As Marnie and Misbah reflected on the scary incident afterwards, it was clear that it could be the start of a beautiful friendship.
7. Is there a strong future for Juliet and Peri?
Juliet and Peri's romantic connection was another major Hollyoaks curveball which was first teased in the flashforward. The episode showed Juliet declaring her love for Peri in an emotional scene, while Peri revealed that she felt the same way and the pair shared a kiss.
We still seem to be quite a way off from this – Peri doesn't currently see Juliet as relationship material, while Juliet is currently preoccupied with taking over Jordan's patch to carry out drugs jobs for Victor.
We'd like to think that Hollyoaks will give Juliet and Peri some happiness after such a long build-up, but let's not forget that Juliet was seen with cuts on her face and seemed visibly distressed. The jury's out on a strong future for the new couple.
8. What sends Ella off the rails?
Ella has largely been absent from the County Lines story so far this year. It's possible that her involvement would have had more on-screen build-up, if Hollyoaks hadn't gone off air during the summer due to lockdown.
Fear not, though, as Ella hasn't been forgotten. Hollyoaks' recent trailer showed that Juliet will decide to bring Ella on board as a new drugs helper. She shamelessly threatens Ella's family if she doesn't get involved.
Juliet then records footage of Ella selling drugs to Charlie, planning to use it to ensure her future cooperation. It seems that Ella may well be manipulated into entering a very dark world.
9. What happens to Sid?
Sid Sumner may not have physically featured in any of the flashforward scenes, but was still at the centre of an ominous moment. On December 31, 2020, Sid was seemingly nowhere to be seen when Leela was looking for him to perform at the wedding.
Sid's smashed-up guitar was seen on the floor, hinting that something terrible could have happened. Does this make him a top contender for the body bag?
When Digital Spy asked Billy Price – who plays Sid – that question earlier this year, he replied: "Sid's a massive contender! The audience should be worried. But there are so many other characters in the mix too – and things that are happening this year that haven't been shown yet – so there are so many different contenders."
He added: "I've said this from the get-go – it was a pleasure to carry on in the show and be made a regular. I'd love to stay in Hollyoaks.
"But depending on the outcome the story writers have in mind, I'd want it to be the best ending for Sid, so the viewers get the best reaction and feeling out of it, rather than just me getting another year in the show! I'd want the viewers to feel like Sid got the best ending."
Hollyoaks currently airs new episodes from Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4. Classic episodes, titled Hollyoaks Favourites, air on Fridays at 7pm on E4.
