Alongside the usual parade of reality show names, pop stars and relatively unknown relations to much bigger names, each season of I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! usually throws up at least one contestant you'd never expect to see chowing down on some ostrich anus.

And with the apparent last-minute signing of Noel Edmonds, the former Deal or No Deal host who previously described the show as cruelty TV, this year is no exception.

Only time will tell whether his inclusion will bring the drama (we suspect it will). But for now, here's a look back at ten other unlikely former campmates who can undoubtedly be described as TV gold.

1. Jennie Bond - Series 3, 2004

The inclusion of the BBC's long-running royal correspondent Jennie Bond apparently enticed none other than The Queen herself to tune in to I'm A Celebrity's third season. And Her Majesty would no doubt have been impressed with what she saw.

Bond was expected to be little more than squeamish cannon fodder before entering the jungle. But instead she became the first of many posh celebs to subvert their public persona and ended up nearly winning the whole thing.

The memorable Bushtucker Trial, which saw her buried in a coffin crammed full of rats, was just one of many times Bond put her much younger campmates to shame.

2. John Lydon - Series 3, 2004

Some purists argued that the spirit of punk truly died the day that John Lydon signed up for an ITV reality show also starring Katie Price, Peter Andre and Kerry Katona.

But the man formerly known as Johnny Rotten wasn't exactly a stranger to the genre – he'd appeared on Judge Judy back in 1997 – and you could argue that there was something inherently punk about his time in the jungle anyway.

Indeed, the ex-Sex Pistols frontman left on his own terms after 11 days, having already caused yet another media furore with his live on-air description of the viewers as 'f***ing c**ts.'

3. Paul Burrell - Series 4, 2004

Following his time in the jungle, Princess Diana's one-time butler was just as just as renowned for pulling ridiculous facial expressions while putting his hand in a rock face as he was for his royal connections.

The eventual runner-up provided one of the all-time great Bushtucker Trial moments thanks to some hilarious histrionics which suggested that taking care of creepy crawlies was never one of his Buckingham Palace duties.

4. Carol Thatcher - Series 5, 2005

As the daughter of perhaps the most divisive Prime Minister in British history, Carol Thatcher couldn't have had a bigger handicap going into I'm a Celeb's fifth season.

But thanks to her 'jolly hockey sticks' character, dry sense of humour and willingness to eat kangaroo testicles, she soon changed her negative public perception and eventually ran out the winner.

5. George Takei - Season 8, 2008

Before Stanley Johnson came along in 2017, George Takei was the oldest contestant ever to grace the jungle.

But proving that age ain't nothin' but a number, the baritone-voiced seventy-something soon struck up a heartwarming friendship with a squeaky-voiced young UK soap star which became the highlight of I'm A Celeb's eighth season.

Indeed, best known for playing Sulu in the original Star Trek, George Takei hit it off with Joe Swash immediately, with the pair regularly sharing a few platonic smooches in the process.

6. Kim Woodburn - Series 9, 2009

We already knew that Kim Woodburn was not a woman to be messed with, having watched her boss around the nation's most slovenly people for years on How Clean Is Your House?

But it was only on I'm A Celebrity that we began to realise just what an unstoppable force of nature she really is.

Just like she would later do on Celebrity Big Brother, the expert cleaner took great joy in informing the rest of her fellow contestants exactly what she thought of them – whether it was chastising Katie Price for attention seeking or tactlessly advising Justin Ryan to get his facial moles removed.

7. Shaun Ryder - Series 10, 2010

Cursing live on teatime Channel 4. Poisoning thousands of pigeons in one go.

Like John Lydon, Shaun Ryder didn't exactly seem like a prime candidate for a mainstream reality show regularly watched by ten million viewers.

And yet the one-time hell-raiser proved to be charm personified during a good-natured series in which he finished second only to new national treasure Stacey Solomon.

8. Michael Buerk - Series 14, 2014

Whether it was reading the BBC's Six O'Clock News or making us fearful to leave the house as the host of 999, the authoritative Michael Buerk was once synonymous with gravitas.

And yet in a move which he freely admits was entirely motivated by money, the anchorman decided to spend the end of 2014 holed up in the Australian outback with a TOWIE star, a Playboy bunny and a rapper.

And yet despite his obvious reservations, Buerk threw himself into jungle life, also forging an unlikely bush bromance with Tinchy Stryder which inspired him to lay down some particularly dodgy rhymes. (sample: "I'm Michael and I'm real cool, stuck in the jungle, feel a real fool/My pants are red and I have no bed").

9. Lady Colin Campbell - series 15, 2015

Aristocrat Lady Colin Campbell - or 'Lady C' - sparked intrigue from the moment she uttered her first words on I'm a Celebrity…

And it was her colourful use of the English language which provided the most entertainment in season 15, as she tore through each of her campmates in a whirlwind of hilarious, if brutal, insults.

Tony Hadley ("a fat slob"), Duncan Bannatyne ("an impertinent old goat") and Brian Friedman ("a self-important little runt") were just a few of the celebs who bore the brunt of her sharp tongue before she left amid claims that she was the one being bullied.

I'm a Celebrity airs on ITV.
