Casualty spoilers follow.
It's a sad day for Casualty fans, as the show is now going off air for the foreseeable future.
Saturday night's visit to the ED (August 22) marked the moment that the BBC medical decided to park its current series, due to the UK lockdown disrupting filming earlier in the year.
With no word yet on when Casualty will be back on our screens, we've been left with a lot of questions to ponder over in the meantime...
1. Will Connie and Jacob reunite?
Their passionate kiss earned the cliffhanger of tonight's final (for now) Casualty episode, but what does the future really hold for Connie and Jacob in the long-term?
The on-off couple have been apart for four years, but Connie and Jacob gave in to the palpable tension between them amid a huge argument about their differing views on how to run the department.
Speaking about whether this could lead the way into a reunion, Charles Venn – who plays Jacob – said to TV Times: "I know that I want their long-awaited reunion to be a permanent one. If I had my way, Jacob and Connie would be married! They'd have a beautiful white wedding and live happily ever after. But the writers won't be having that and I've already accepted it's not going to happen!
"Yet I like to think there's going to be a steamy, hot, intense period for as long as it lasts between them. They've both gone on interesting journeys, so I'm really curious to see how things play out this time."
2. And will they be able to work alongside each other?
The other big question regarding Connie and Jacob's future is how they are going to navigate their new professional relationship as well as their personal one.
Jacob defied Connie on his first day as clinical nurse manager, publicly challenging her bias towards the doctors during a board meeting.
Jacob's new role means he faces more inevitable clashes with Connie over the running of the department, but will they find a way to work alongside each other or is it a recipe for disaster?
3. Is Grace returning?
Another big question we've been left with tonight is in regards to Connie's now-teenage daughter Grace, and whether we could see her back in Holby when the show returns.
Grace, played by Emily Carey, hasn't been seen since 2017 and is currently living abroad with her dad – Connie's ex – Sam Strachan. However, tonight's episode suggested that could be about to change as Connie told Jacob that Grace had decided to live with her now instead.
Speaking about a possible return for Grace, Amanda Mealing – who plays Connie – said to Digital Spy last year: "I'd love her to return, but I think we would struggle to get her back now. I think if we did get her back, it would only be for a short stint because she is so successful in Hollywood. But yes, I would love to work with Emily again."
That said, Emily wouldn't be the first child star to be recast, so watch this space...
4. What next for Noel?
Receptionist Noel was left devastated tonight, when a heartbreaking error resulted in a patient passing away suddenly.
Noel has been struggling with his increasing job demands and, in all the chaos of reception, forgot to inform grandmother Teri of the triage process. Teri, unable to face the wait, decided to leave – despite her head injury – and later died of a heart attack before doctors could examine her.
Although Will tried to assure Noel that Teri's cause of death wasn't definitive, and they may not have checked her heart anyway, he did have to explain that there would be an investigation and inquest into what happened. What now for Noel?
5. How long will Fenisha's pregnancy stay secret?
That remains to be seen, but the plot has very much been left up in the air – with baby daddy Ethan, and the rest of Fenisha's colleagues, still in the dark about her pregnancy.
We already know that the initial plan was to revisit Ethan's Huntington's disease through the plot, but fans now face a much lengthy wait to see how it all unfolds.
6. Will Jade see her birth mum again?
Jade was warned to stay away from her birth mum Susie in the show's groundbreaking episode centring on her deafness back in July, and we've not heard much it since.
Granted, Jade seemed far more preoccupied party planning with Marty in tonight's episode, but we'd be surprised if Casualty had parked their plans to explore her past completely.
Gabriella Leon – who plays the sweet-natured nurse – hinted that we may have seen the last of Susie at the time, so will this plot be revisited when the show returns?
7. Will Faith discover the truth about Lev?
Another story that has been left very high up in the air is regarding Lev – and the secrets he is keeping from his wife Faith.
Dylan did inform Faith of Lev's betrayal earlier this month, but she seemingly didn't believe him – or did she? We don't know. And we won't know for a while.
8. Will Luka respond to treatment?
Faith and Lev's world crumbled a few weeks ago when medics informed them that there was nothing more they could do to help their young son Luka.
Luka was diagnosed with a brain tumour earlier this year, and despite efforts from world class surgeon Zsa Zsa Harper-Jenkinson (aka Sharon Gless), the doctors have been unable to treat it.
However, Faith and Lev were given a glimmer of hope when they learned Luka was eligible for proton beam therapy, which he started a few weeks ago. But what does the future hold for him?
9. When will Casualty be back?
It's the all-important question, and sadly, not one we have an answer to at the moment. At the time of writing, the cast and crew at Casualty still haven't been able to resume filming in Cardiff, but are believed to be returning next month.
Therefore a December return seems like the best case scenario at this stage, but it's also possible that the show won't be back until early next year. As always, we will be keeping you up to date with developments as and when we have them, so watch this space.
Casualty airs on Saturday nights on BBC One.
