Spandex-clad fitness legend Mr Motivator is plotting a comeback.

According to The Daily Mirror, the 66-year-old is set to film a new fitness special for the BBC, and has called for a return to ‘feelgood television’.

Asked by the newspaper whether TV had changed since his heyday appearing on ITV morning show GMTV, he replied: “Of course — watching people making a fool of themselves or being obnoxious to each other.

“Where is feelgood television?

“There’s a role for that kind of attitude on TV rather than what we see every single day, which is the shouting and the screaming blatantly pushed in front of your face. A quality needs to return.

“All too often, what we get is all the nasty stuff, all the bad stuff. We laugh at the nasty stuff — we laugh at people having problems rather than saying, ‘Let me listen to how they cope. Let me see what they have to do to change their life’.

“Feelgood TV needs to come back. We need to highlight people who make us feel good.”

The presenter, real name Derrick Evans, added that he’d be willing to return to the morning schedules too.

“On morning television, I believe that there’s a role for me even more,” he said. “Even if it’s only to say, ‘Your parents grew up doing what I was doing and listening to what I was saying on breakfast TV. You now must do the same because there’s some positive messages that will resonate with you for your future.’

“My message is even more important now.”

Evans moved to Jamaica to open an eco tourism resort in 2003, but announced last year he was planning to raffle off his £1.8 million property, with tickets at £23, so that he could return to the UK to look after his make-up artist daughter who has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

He is now based in Manchester.
