A COLCHESTER slip road closed as part of an ongoing A12 project has been extended by nearly two weeks after weather conditions stunted progress.

The A12 is currently being reconstructed between Marks Tey and Stanway by engineers from National Highways.

The ambitious revamp, which started back in October last year, will see the current concrete road surface completely removed, alongside some of its foundations.

The road will then be rebuilt using recycled materials and resurfaced with asphalt at a cost of £37 million.

As part of the project, which is not expected to conclude until the winter of 2023/24, the Londonbound exit slip road at Stanway is being overhauled.

The section of Colchester road has been shut since March 10 and was due to reopen on April 3, but works have now been pushed back after recent weather conditions.

A spokesman for National Highways: “Unfortunately, we’ve experienced some unexpected ground conditions and adverse weather whilst removing the existing concrete road surface, which means we need to extend this work until April 15.

“So far, we’ve removed the concrete surface and begun digging out the excess material from underneath the existing road surface, which is taking longer than planned due to recent weather conditions.

“Once we’ve removed the excess material, we’ll begin rebuilding the slip road and resurfacing it with asphalt.

“For the safety of our workers and all road users, the A12 northbound exit slip road at junction 26 Stanway will need to remain closed until 6am on April 15 while we complete this phase of our work.

“I’m sorry for the disruption this closure may cause and encourage drivers to plan ahead and allow extra time when travelling.”

National Highways bosses did add the dates are “subject to change at short notice due to unforeseen circumstances or poor weather conditions”, however assured drivers they are working to complete the work “as quickly as possible”.

Traffic will be diverted to continue northbound on the A12 to exit at junction 27, before using the Spring Lane Roundabout to enter the A12 southbound carriageway and exiting using the A12 junction 26 southbound exit slip road.
