A diversion route is currently in place on the A12 following a 'serious' crash. The incident occurred on the Kelvedon Bypass on the major Essex dual carriageway at around 9.30am today (October 22).

The accident, which happened between J23 B1024 London Road (Kelvedon South) and J24 (Kelvedon North), has seen emergency services at the scene for three hours. Road users have been told that severe delays are expected with drivers caught in traffic for around an hour.

A diversion is now in place for commuters, while emergency services attend the three vehicle accident. Although it is strongly advised to avoid the area, National Highways have introduced a diversion for the northbound traffic, which remains at a standstill.

Drivers are advised to exit the A12 at J23 and follow the B1024 through Kelvedon. Traffic can then rejoin the A12 at J24. National Highways says: "If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."

A spokesperson for Essex Police said: "We’re on the scene of serious collision involving a number of vehicles on the A12 northbound at Kelvedon. The road is closed in both directions whilst emergency services deal with the incident. We will provide an update when we practically can."

While it remains unclear on the condition of those involved in the crash, National Highways has confirmed that an air ambulance did attend the scene.
