A180 road closures discussed in Parliament as National Highways announce works extended into 2025

Road closures on the A180 have been raised in Parliament as it was announced the works have been extended due to poor weather.

Brigg and Immingham MP Martin Vickers said roads in his constituency are "under greater pressure" because of traffic moving onto them as the A180 is "being patched up". He and neighbouring Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes MP Melanie Onn met National Highways earlier this month to discuss the A180.

Ms Onn secured a debate in Parliament in September on northern Lincolnshire transport, where she described driving on the A180's concrete section as a "juddering journey". There are currently a series of overnight closures taking place on the A180, between Brocklesby Junction and the M180 junction, by Barnetby-le-Wold, as repairs to prolong the surface's life for five years take place.

These began in mid-October on the westbound carriageway. The closures are set to continue on this side, Monday to Friday between 8pm and 6am, until December 10. Eastbound weekday overnight closures will start on December 10 and continue until December 20 with the same timings, and then pick up again from January 2-14, 2025. Weather has impacted the original schedule. Latest information on National Highways daily closures can be found here.

"Roads in my constituency are under greater pressure because traffic from the A180 is continually being transferred on to them while it is being patched up," said Mr Vickers. "Will the Secretary of State meet me and the hon. Member for Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes to discuss this and other transport issues in the area?"

"You are running out of road," said Speaker Lindsay Hoyle to laughter, as he gently chided the length of the question. Transport Secretary Louise Haigh did not indicate take-up of the invite by herself. But she was sure Roads Minister Lillian Greenwood "would be very happy" to meet the two MPs.

The A180 concrete surface life extension works this autumn are costing £8m. Two-hundred concrete bays are being replaced, with the westbound side prioritised because more work was needed on that side. Ulceby's 7.5 tonne weight restrictions remain in place throughout the works.

Announcing the extension to the road closures, National Highways said: "Due to recent weather conditions and the need for additional work to be carried out in this section, we now expect to be working in this section until mid-January 2025.

"We plan to remove all traffic management over the Christmas embargo period, from 6am on 20 December. We will then reinstate all traffic management on 2 January, with a lane one closure on the eastbound carriageway." All work will be subject to weather conditions.
