A section of the A19 was closed for almost two hours on Monday following a two-vehicle collision involving a motorbike.

North East Ambulance Service were called to the A19 Southbound between Holystone and Killingworth at 9pm and transported two people to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (NSECH) in Cramlington for further treatment.

The hospital was "pre alerted" to their arrival, a process in which ambulance crews alert accident and emergency colleagues of the severe nature of an incident and the fact that potentially seriously ill or injured patients will soon be arriving at hospital.

Today, Northumbria Police reported that no-one is believed to have been seriously injured. The force attended the scene of the collision shortly after 9pm following an alert from the ambulance service. Highways officers and also attended the scene and the road remained closed until shortly before 10.45pm.

Northumbria Police added that this was to allow for the uplift of the vehicles.

A NEAS spokesperson said: "We received a call at 9pm this evening to report of a road traffic incident involving a motorbike and vehicle on the A19 in the Backworth area of Newcastle. We sent two emergency ambulance crews and a clinical team leader and pre alerted two patients to Cramlington hospital for further treatment."

While the incident was ongoing, National Highways posted on social media: "The A19 is CLOSED southbound between the A1056 Killingworth and the A186/A191 Holystone due to a road traffic collision. National Highways Traffic Officers, Northumbria Police and North East Ambulance are on scene. More details to follow, thank you for your patience."
