A19 northbound closed near Sunderland after car hits tree in serious collision
The A19 northbound at Sunderland is currently closed following a serious collision in which a car left the road and hit a tree.
The single-vehicle collision happened shortly before 5.30pm this evening, between the A183 (Pennywell) and A1231 (Hylton) near Sunderland.
In a post on X National Highways North East said: "The A19 is closed northbound between A183 and A1231 near Sunderland following a collision which has resulted in a car hitting a tree."

It also issued a further post which described the collision as "serious" and said Northumbria Police officers are at the scene.
National Highways North East has issued diversion details for drivers who may be affected by the closure of the northbound carriageway on the A19.
On their website, National Highways North East has issued the following advice: "Road users travelling north are advised to follow the hollow triangle symbol on road signs.
"Exit the A19 and follow the exit slip road until it meets the roundabout. Take the first exit on the A183 heading towards Shiney Row. At the roundabout with the A182/Chester Road, take the 3rd exit on to the A182 (small section remains A183). Travel north on the A182 for approx. 3.1 miles.
"At Galleries North Interchange, take the 3rd exit on to the A1231. Continue on the A1232 and rejoin the A19 northbound at Hylton Grange Interchange."
They advise to plan your journey ahead if you had travel plans this evening, and also to seek alternative routes to your journey.
