A421 drainage work clears 'more water than you’d find in three Olympic-sized swimming pools'
Draining work being carried out on the A421 has cleared eight million litres of water. And National Highways says that the work is not yet finished.
As of yesterday (Thursday), there had been a clearance of more than the volume of 'three Olympic-sized swimming pools', according to the roads body. It said that it has predicted a total yield of around 60 million litres of water when the road is cleared.
National Highways said: "By the end of last night, we'd removed around eight million litres of water from the A421 which is more than you’d find in three Olympic-sized swimming pools. There's lots more work to do and we're predicting there's around 60 million litres of water to clear."

Earlier this week, the A421 had been rendered impassable. Earlier on Friday (September 27), PA news agency reported that the Bedfordshire route was expected to remain closed in both directions on Friday between the A6 Bedford and M1 junction 13 near Marston Moretaine, as floodwater continued to be pumped clear from the junction.
Meteorologist Greg Dewhurst told the PA news agency: “There will continue to be localised flooding. A lot of these areas have been hit by rain in the past few weeks which means the ground is already saturated.”
