A421 remains closed in Bedfordshire after flooding - as more rain forecast
A major A-road near Cambridgeshire looks set to remain closed throughout Friday after flooding at the weekend. Heavy rain on Sunday saw the A421 shut to traffic in Bedfordshire as it was submerged in up to eight feet of water.
National Highways has been working to pump millions of litres of water off the road. The closure remains in place as Met Office weather warnings remain in force - with an amber weather warning in force across north Bedfordshire between 6pm on Thursday (September 26) and Friday (September 27).
A National Highways spokesperson said: "Following spells of torrential rain flooding occurred at Marston Moretaine on the evening of Sunday 22 September with water levels of up eight feet recorded. This has severely impacted efforts to clear floodwater from the carriageway.

"National Highways service providers continue to work at scene and at present a number of articulated tankers and pumping equipment are in use as efforts to clear the road continue."
They added: "At this time, it is expected the A421 will remain closed today and tomorrow (Friday 27th September) National Highways is working to pump large amounts of water clear from the junction and following this operation, there will be abandoned vehicles to recover and an extensive clean-up operation to ensure the road is safe to open."
Inrix, the traffic data company, said: "A421 in both directions closed due to flooding between A6 The Branston Way (Marsh Leys Roundabout, Kempston) and M1 J13 / A421 / A507 (Bedford / Milton Keynes South, Brogborough).
