The A54 Cat and Fiddle will be undergoing road closures from the junction with the A53 to the county boundary at the end of the working week. The road was shut earlier today (Wednesday, February 5), and will be closed again on Thursday and Friday from 9am to 3pm each day.

The closure is due to road patching repairs and lining works taking place, Derbyshire County Council has announced. These are interim repairs and small scale resurfacing, the council said, as was done last year with Leek Road, due to current weather conditions “ahead of a bigger resurfacing scheme planned for later in the year”.

Drivers will be shown a signed diversion route. The council has advised drivers to allow extra time for their journey and has apologised for “any delays or disruption caused”.

Derbyshire County Council has also encouraged residents to report any road faults, such as potholes, on its website. Road users can also report issues with road markings or traffic signs, draining or flooding, or pavement conditions.

You can check road conditions across the county by using the council's traffic cameras. Each picture is updated at least every 20 minutes, 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, it says.

The Cat and Fiddle is named after the pub at its summit and is famous for its scenic views. While it is popular with motorcyclists due to its frequent bends, it has often been described as one of the most dangerous roads in the UK.

However, in 2015, the Cat and Fiddle dropped out of the Road Safety Foundation’s top ten list of “persistently higher risk roads” for the first time. Between 2008 and 2011, there were 44 crashes on the road, while between 2011 and 2013, there were 34 crashes.
