A restaurant which became popular with A90 drivers has announced 'with a heavy heart' it had no choice but to close down.

The Angus Grill and Larder in Brechin became a staple stop for commuters travelling to and from Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, priding itself on its quality food.

It opened only two years ago with the aim of showcasing the best of Angus, but in an update on their Facebook page they announced the current economic climate had forced them to shut their doors for good.

They posted: "It is with a heavy heart that today we closed our wonderful Brechin restaurant, Angus Grill + Larder.

"Sadly, the current economic climate and treatment of the hospitality industry by the current UK Government simply forced our business to close.

"Growing costs, rising rates, increased NI, higher energy and a constant bombardment of taxes on brick and mortar businesses made our operating costs simply too high. We’re not the first this week and we won’t be the last.

"We want to thank the staff with all our hearts and are working towards helping them secure new employment. For all those in hospitality - be careful, because the government certainly don’t have your back."

Fans of the eatery were quick to share their disappointment at the news of losing a popular stop along the A90.

One wrote: "Really sorry to hear this. This has been our favourite coffee and cake stop on our Aberdeen to Edinburgh journey over the last 2 years.

"The effort you put into both the catering and the premises made it somewhere we were keen to support."

Another added: "Really sorry to hear this. We have enjoyed our stops for the best food by a mile on the road between Aberdeen and Edinburgh.

"The government should be encouraging local enterprises and businesses, not killing them. We wish you well with any future plans."

And a third shared: "Really sorry to hear this. Our family always enjoyed stopping by your place. The food and staff were always great. Thank you for so many good dinners. Wishing you all the best."
