Aberdeen Beach Leisure Centre set for demolition by next spring but new venue on hold

Aberdeen Beach Leisure Centre will be demolished by spring 2025, but its replacement has been left in doubt.

The second phase of the beach upgrade includes plans for a new pier and a new home for Aberdeen FC, with the project given a multi-million-pound price tag.

However, finance chiefs have raised concerns over the cost of the revamp, with new documents revealing they think future plans should be shelved "until additional resources can be identified."

It is expected that the project, which includes a new leisure centre, will cost a staggering £441million as council chiefs look to make the beach a tourist destination.

Demolition of the leisure centre is currently underway, with the building fenced off, and council documents note that "complexities arising from the connectivity of buildings."

Efforts are currently being made to ensure there are no disruptions to the existing Ice Arena.

Meanwhile work is ongoing to create a new Beach Park which is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2025/first quarter of 2026. It also includes upgrades at Broadhill and a new events park.

Discussions currently remain ongoing with Aberdeen FC over the future of a new beach stadium, with the Dons expected to foot the bill for their new home.

And teams have also started work on the streets on approach to the beachfront, with Links Road closed for eight weeks at its junction with Cotton Street.

Council leaders will discuss the next steps for the beach revamp on Wednesday (August 21) where the future of the project will be decided.
