Aberdeen to mark Holocaust Memorial Day as survivor shares powerful testimony
Aberdeen will hold several commemorative events to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2025, with a survivor sharing a powerful testimony of its importance.
Taking place on Monday (January 27), it will honour the memory of six million Jews and other groups murdered during the holocaust, as well as victims of more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. The citywide event will take place at Cowdray Hall by Aberdeen Art Gallery.
Starting at 11.45am, it will feature a musical performance by Music 4 U before the formal proceedings begin at 12pm. Holocaust survivor Chava Nissimov will share her powerful testimony, alongside readings by pupils from Northfield Academy and a dance performance. The event will conclude with a reflection from Lord Provost Dr David Cameron.

Dr Cameron emphasised the importance of the day: “Aberdeen quite rightly comes together every year to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. It is of great importance that we continue to remember the millions of victims and survivors of not only the Holocaust but also other genocides.”
Reflecting on this year’s theme, “For a Better Future,” Dr Cameron said: “This theme allows us to look ahead to brighter futures in the hope of peace across many nations. I encourage people from all communities across our city, regardless of their faith or non-faith, to attend this very moving event.”
Other events on during the day include:
Memorial Day Walk: University staff and students will walk from the Multifaith Chaplaincy at 11:00 am to Cowdray Hall, arriving for the citywide event.
LGBTQ+ Remembrance: At 4 Unity Cafe from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, a reflection will focus on the lived experiences of queer individuals during the 1930s.
Talk by Chava Nissimov: At 6:00 pm in Aberdeen Central Library, Nissimov will share her harrowing experiences of escaping the Warsaw Ghetto.
Marischal College will be lit in purple from the early hours as a tribute to the Holocaust Memorial flame. All events are free, but booking is recommended. Visit Aberdeen City’s website for details.
