Aberdeenshire weather hits lows of -9C overnight as temperatures set to rise next week

The north-east was subjected to another freezing night as temperatures hit lows of -9C in Aberdeenshire.

Aboyne saw the lowest overnight temperature in the region at -9C, while Aberdeen Airport reached lows of -7C.

It comes after the UK experienced its coldest January overnight temperature since 2010, when temperatures dropped below -15C several times at locations across the UK, including -22.3C on January 8 in Altnaharra in the north of Scotland.

The average low in northern Scotland for this time of year is about 0.3C, while for England, overnight lows are about 1.5C to 1.6C.

However, Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire will finally hit the end of the cold snap next week with temperatures to rise dramatically to around 10C in the city and up to 12C in parts of Aberdeenshire.

Overnight on Sunday is when the milder air will arrive, by the end of the night temperatures in Northern Ireland and western Scotland could be between 9C and 10C, while most places will be between -1C and 3C, which is not as cold compared to recent nights, he added.

Tuesday will be similar, but potentially drier with temperatures between 11-12C in the north and 8-9C in the south.

Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst confirmed it "(will be) back to average temperatures generally for the time of year."
