n 1972, Benny Andersson, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus came together
and formed ABBA. They rocketed to stardom in 1974 when they performed ‘Waterloo’ during the
Eurovision competition, and were Swedens first winners. During their active years, Agnetha and
Björn, and Anni-Frid and Benny married, however both marriages ended in divorce, and eventually
the group broke up in 1982.
Being a huge fan of everything ABBA, liking all their music, and loving Mamma Mia! And Mamma
Mia! Here We Go Again, I was extremely excited to attend the ABBA Voyage concert in Shepperton,
where virtual holograms perform some of ABBA’s greatest hits, as well as some newly recorded
songs following a reunion in 2016.
While the holograms were extremely impressive, and a very realistic depiction on stage, the
experience was enhanced by the absolutely stunning visual effects, such as lights, graphics and
colour. Some of the stand-out performances were ‘Chiquitita’ which had a very simple, yet very
gorgeous sun-like effect from the light, ‘Lay All Your Love on Me,’ which had amazing 2D video-game
like graphics, and cleverly faded to reveal the 3D holograms standing almost perfectly aligned with
the previous 2D graphic floor and ‘Voulez-Vous,’ which showed a very beautiful animated short
movie along with the song, cleverly contrasting with the main 3D body of the concert.
Overall, the concert was visually stunning, and a massive extension of the huge work from ABBA.
ABBA is a truly timeless band, cemented in the hearts of all ages, from teenagers to fully grown
adults, all of whom were present in celebrating ABBA during the concert. I would definitely
recommend that any fan of ABBA give this concert a watch, and fully appreciate the work that went into this absolutely breathtaking visual and auditory experience.
