Stoke City should have been taking on Hull City with 10-men according to Gary Rowett, with Ben Gibson fortunate to have not been sent off for an early altercation against the Tigers. The vastly experienced centre-back left his mark on young City recruit Oscar Zambrano as he charged in looking to get on the end of a corner for the hosts.

Zambrano found himself flattened as Gibson ran in from a corner, seemingly leading with an elbow which caught the City man in the face and leaving him on the floor. The incident was missed by the referee with Gibson escaping punishment, much to the disillusionment of Rowett, who was watching in the Sky Sports studio.

Speaking at half-time in the game, Rowett said Gibson was very lucky to have not been sent off for the challenge.

"I'm absolutely amazed, I just don't know what he's doing," said Rowett. "Ben Gibson is running with his arm out, he looks at the defender, he pushes after that. I'll be honest with you, I can't see any other outcome really than a red card for that sort of incident."

It was a sentiment shared by former Tigers midfielder Jake Livermore, who felt it showed the type of aggression Stoke were playing with. It was City who came out second half with more aggression about them as they set about levelling matters through Kasey Palmer.
