Accrington from the air before the Arndale came to town

This great aerial view shows part of Accrington town centre in the early 1980s.

The town’s impressive railway viaduct cuts across the photo with Whalley Road running top to bottom of the picture on the right hand side.

This was before the Arndale Centre so in the foreground on the left you can see the Unit Four Cinema with the white frontage and the shops on Broadway. Behind them is the free car park which was such a feature of the town centre.
