If you're after some hearty grub to grab on the go while you're doing your Christmas shopping it seems you need look no further than a certain beloved venue in the Grainger Market.

Last week, we asked you where your favourite takeaway venue was in Newcastle city centre - and Greek street food favourite Acropolis won by a comfortable margin. Beginning life in Newcastle back in 2016, Acropolis can now be found across the North East including in the new Stack St James venue, Byker's Hoults Yard, Jesmond's Acorn Road, Gateshead's Metrocentre and Stack Seaburn.

Visitors to the likes of the Quayside, Tynemouth, Jesmond and Hebburn markets can often find an Acropolis stall to fuel their browsing too. The business' takeover of the region is a testament to its immense popularity, with people flocking from afar to try out their signature gyros, souvlaki and other authentic Greek favourites.

Delighted to have won our reader poll, the talented team behind the takeaway said: "We're very proud that we are a family business that started from Newcastle and have amazing support from the locals. And we couldn't do it without the love and support from them and our amazing Acropolis team!"

Acropolis has won far more than our reader poll during its time feeding the people of the North East, having come out on top multiple times at Wylam Brewery's Battle Royale competition which sees food vendors from across the region go head-to-head. Last year, it was also shortlisted for the title of North East Restaurant of the Year in the Uber Eats Awards.

And there's plenty to look forward to for Acropolis fans over the festive season and beyond, too. The business shared with ChronicleLive: "We are launching the Festive gyro for the first time next week which will have turkey, gravy, carrots, parsnips, seasoned fries and a cranberry sauce all wrapped with our Greek pita bread!"

They added: "We've been working really hard on planning the Acropolis expansion. You can see this year's results with five Acropolis sites and the sixth one to be in Middlesbrough very soon! We're very satisfied we managed to do it and hopefully we will do more with our incredible team in 2025."
