Activists Rally Outside Constitutional Court as Abortion Legalized in Some Cases

Groups of activists gathered outside Chile’s constitutional court on August 21, some in support and others in opposition to a legal ruling that allows women to seek an abortion in certain cases.

The court ruled that a law legalizing abortion in certain cases does not violate the constitution, which Reuters described as a win for President Michelle Bachelet’s center-left coalition and for groups that have campaigned for years against the country’s ban. Chile had prohibited abortion in all cases since 1989.
