Actor Randy Quaid And Wife Released From Jail

Actor Randy Quaid and his wife Evi have been released from custody after they were arrested while entering the US from Canada over a 2010 vandalism case.

Vermont Superior Court Judge Alison Arms freed them without any conditions or requirement to post bail.

The couple said they would now seek to resolve charges in California that led to their detention on Saturday by Vermont state troopers.

Court papers say the Quaids were found squatting in the guesthouse of a Santa Barbara home they previously owned.

They allegedly damaged or destroyed furniture, a fireplace and a mirror at the property.

Judge Arms originally ordered the couple to be held on $500,000 (£322,000) bail.

But on Thursday she said there was no probable cause to detain them on fugitive-from-justice charges.

Defence lawyer Peter Langrock told the court that Evi Quaid had been left traumatised after she was involved in a prison row.

He said a woman accused in an attempted murder case had used faeces during the altercation.

The couple told reporters they would stay in Vermont to care for Evi Quaid's ailing father, before resolving the California charges.

Randy Quaid, 65, said he wants to join the volunteer fire department in the town of Lincoln.

The couple fled the US after the California charges, saying they were victims of persecution.

A California prosecutor is seeking $10,000 in restitution in the case.

Randy Quaid had sought to stay in Canada, saying he was being hunted by "Hollywood star-whackers" who he claimed killed his friends David Carradine and Heath Ledger.

Randy, the older brother of actor Dennis Quaid, is known for his roles in films such as National Lampoon's Vacation and Independence Day.
