The Addams Family – where are they now?

From Digital Spy

Based on the cartoon and '60s TV series, The Addams Family became an instant hit on its release in 1991, a year which also saw Beauty and the Beast, Terminator 2 and Oscar darling The Silence of the Lambs in cinemas.

They were creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky, and altogether ooky – and audiences all over the world couldn't get enough of Morticia, Gomez and the gang.

So much so that, just two years later, a sequel hit movie theatres. Although critically well-received, Addams Family Values took less than half its predecessor at the box office (and cost twice as much to make). Addams Family Reunion, meanwhile… let's not go there.

But let's not dwell on that, let's see what the actors behind The Addams Family have been up to all these years...

The woman behind the family's matriarch had a great run-up to her first outing as Morticia Addams, as movies The Grifters, Prizzi's Honor and equally spooky The Witches will attest.

Unsurprisingly, she returned for the sequel Addams Family Values two years later and continued to impress in the Wes Anderson flicks The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and The Darjeeling Limited.

In recent years Huston has provided her amazing tones to animations BoJack Horseman, All Hail King Julien and American Dad! to name but three and starred in NBC's Medium and Amazon's award-winning Transparent.

Tragically, Juliá's life was cut short just three years after making The Addams Family.

During this time he reprised Gomez Addams in the sequel whilst his final film part came in big screen adaptation of the videogame Street Fighter.

Raúl died in 1994 after complications from a stroke. He was posthumously awarded a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his lead role in HBO movie The Burning Season.

Christopher Lloyd

Lloyd, originally known for the lovably anarchic Jim in sitcom Taxi (out-weirding and performing both Danny de Vito and Andy Kaufman), became famous for Back to the Future and played Uncle Fester in the first two Addams movies.

The actor continued with family-friendly outings for some time (My Favorite Martian, The Tale of Despereaux) though he has recently appeared in the more adult Piranha 3DD and 2014's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

Christopher is a firm favourite on the convention circuit.

Christina Ricci

One year before playing Wednesday Addams in the 1991 movie, Ricci made her debut in Mermaids with Cher, Bob Hoskins and Winona Ryder, aged just 9 years old.

Parts in kiddie flicks Casper and That Darn Cat followed but within the decade Christina made the jump to more mature material with 1997's The Ice Storm and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas the following year.

The actress recently produced and took one of the leads in Amazon's Z: The Beginning of Everything as the original American flapper, Zelda Fitzgerald, wife of Great Gatsby author F Scott Fitzgerald.

The boy behind troublemaker Pugsley pursued acting for 10 years or so after his debut in The Addams Family (starring in As Good As It Gets with Jack Nicholson), but hasn't been involved in front of the screen for many years.

Workman is a very different prospect now, with an arm full of tattoos, though he has been known to show up at the odd screening of the iconic 1991 movie.

You will recognise his sister Ariel Winter however – best known for playing Alex Dunphy in hit ABC sitcom Modern Family.

Carel Struycken

One of two cast members to feature in the 1998 straight-to-video Addams Family Reunion (and if you can track that one down, we applaud you), Struycken used his gargantuan height to great affect in the Ewoks movie The Battle for Endor, and 1987's The Witches of Eastwick before landing the role of Lurch.

Recently, Struycken could be seen in Netflix's Gerald's Game and also in Twin Peaks, as The Fireman (aka The Giant).

Christopher Hart

An iconic part of The Addams Family, Thing was portrayed by Hart's hand (so good, in fact, he came back for the sequel and the aforementioned Addams Family Renunion with Struycken).

Oddly, Hart's hands are put to good use as he's actually a magician, and can be seen on the magic circuit in the States (though eagle-eyed fans will have spotted him playing "The Hands" in Buffy spin-off Angel).

Judith Malina

Having co-founded The Living Theatre with her husband, German-born actress Malina wasn't exactly a familiar face on television before her role as Granny in The Addams Family.

For reasons unclear, Judith didn't return for the sequel, Addams Family Values, and the part was given to actress Carol Kane (now killing it in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt). Walk-on parts in ER and The Sopranos, amongst others, came her way in the proceeding years.

Malina died at the age of 88 in 2015.
