January is the time of year where a lot of people start thinking about weight loss.

After an indulgent December, people want to start boosting their health and toning up. According to one wellness guru, adding a simple ingredient to your coffee could aid your success.

As well as being only 30p, it's something many of us probably have lying around in the fridge. Toprecipes1 recently shared a recipe on TikTok that's claimed to help people "lose fat naturally".

It's said if you mix a little lemon juice into your coffee each morning, it can help you to lose weight. It may sound simple, but the theory is claimed to have its benefits.

In the clip, the presenter said: "To start, we need three lemons. Cut each one in half, and squeeze its juice into a medium bowl.

"Place the peels in a medium saucepan, along with two teaspoons of coffee and two cinnamon sticks. Add half a litre of water, cover the pot and boil for five minutes.

"Coffee, known for its ability to boost metabolism, is an excellent ally in this mixture. When the mixture is ready, strain the liquid into a container, pour a cup and add a tablespoon of the lemon juice that you reserved at the beginning.

"For each cup that you drink, add one tablespoon of lemon juice. You will consume this on an empty stomach every day for a week. It's important to take it without any kind of sweetener."

Does lemon juice really aid weight loss?

According to experts, it's possible that drinking coffee can help with weight loss, but there is no evidence that adding lemon boosts success rate. Despite this, some people claim it works.

Even though it's been widely rumoured that adding lemon to coffee can help with weight loss, there is little scientific research to back it up.

There is some evidence to suggest that drinking coffee may help with weight loss. A 2023 study found that people with metabolic syndrome who switched from not regularly drinking coffee to drinking one to seven cups a week helped them lose belly fat around their middle.

But, this study was also carried out with people who followed a Mediterranean diet, and also increased their physical activity levels. It's thought coffee’s bioactive compounds could hinder the growth of fat cells and boost metabolism.

Meanwhille, some people turn to lemon water in a bid to lose weight. For example, another study claims consuming water before a meal could help someone to eat less, so could therefore be a good weight loss strategy.

Other studies also suggest that lemon detox diets can aid weight loss, but this works through calorie restriction. Before trying new ways to lose weight, it's always best to seek the advice of a healthcare professional.

According to the NHS, you need energy from calories for your body to work properly. This is because your body uses the energy to work properly.
